As I look at back issues of CA Paint Horse Directory over the past 20 years, I have noticed many great trainers, horses, and exhibitors. One of those Trainers is Jerry & Shelley Lunde, and this is just a small part of their story. Jerry & Shelley Lunde began training horses in 1988 in Norco, CA. Jerry & Shelly has supported APHA, and CA clubs since they started training in CA. Jerry & Shelley Lunde not only work with various breeds and types of horses and riders but they build their lives around helping people succeed not only in the equestrian field but in life. Their unconditional giving to the youth and adults is well known and appreciated in the equine industry. It is well known that Jerry & Shelley will help anyone who needs helps never expecting anything in return, while at the same time Jerry is flying off somewhere to fix horses feet never expecting payment just to do what is needed to help youth, adults and the horse compete. They both have helped build many youth and amateur champions over the years not only in the APHA but in roping and reining as well. While building these champions of the World, they are also teaching and grooming the youth for what will lay ahead in college and adult life. They teach it's not always about winning but about respect, integrity and compassion for those you compete against, other trainers and the Judges. They both build up not tear down the individual and the horses they train. It was not unusual for them to take over 30 show horse to local paint horse shows and one year took 27 paints to the APHA World Show. They have had numerous World and Reserve World Champion, along with many honor roll listings to their credit. One of their horses, Leos Decked Out Tux, broke honor roll records and was #1 youth horse in the nation. They not only train All Around Horses but they train rope horses and their riders. They were instrumental in having ropings at the Temecula Valley Paint Horse Club shows. They also established ropings and barrel racing competitions for their town of Norco, locally called Horse Town USA. When you look back at their list of clients and horses, you will see a long list of great horses and exhibitors such as Hard Hat, More Toys, Pure Loping Lilly, Whata Foxy Chic, Kools Chantress, & Eyes A Double O, Leos Decked Out Tux, The Legalist and Colonels Flashy Gun, just to name a few. When you ask exhibitors about Jerry & Shelley Lunde you will usually get the same response, They are wonderful. At Lunde Show Horses you are not clients, you are family. One of Shelley's favorite things are the horse show barbeques the Mairs family puts on where she and her clients and family can enjoy good food, friends and conversation. Shelly battled breast cancer this year. But, Shelley never missed a show her clients wanted to go to. Which sometimes meant she had to drive back each day for her treatment. She kept going when she didn't feel very well and was unfazed when she lost her hair. She gave lessons, lunged horses and stood on the rail for her clients. Shelley is an inspiration to everyone who knows her. I believe she gets her strength from her faith, Jerry & son Tyler. Thank you Jerry & Shelley for allowing us to be a part of your lives and to be associated with an awesome couple. 7 Counties Paint Horse Club, has the pleasure to nominate Jerry & Shelley Lunde for Horseman of the Year.
