THIS TOO IS OUR STORY TO SHARE
There is a famous story which tells how Jesus returned to glory following
His Passion and Resurrection, still bearing the marks of His suffering. One
of the angels looked at the Lord and said: “You must have suffered terribly
down there. Does the world know what you did for it? Do they all
understand how great your love is for them?”
“No,” Jesus responded. “Not yet. Only a handful of people, my
followers in Palestine, know about my divine love and works of salvation.”
The angel seemed perplexed. “Well, what have you done to ensure that
all people throughout the world will hear about You?”
Christ confidently responded: “I have commanded my disciples, Peter
and Paul, James and John, and the others to make it their business to share
the Good News. And these will tell others, who will still tell others, until the
farthest person of the widest circle throughout the world will hear my story.”
The angel looked especially doubtful now, for he knew well what poor
creatures humans were. “Yes,” he said, “but what if they all forget? What if
they grow weary of the telling? What if they ignore their responsibility?
What if, away down in the 21st century, your followers fail to share the story
of your love for the world? What then? Haven't you made any back-up
plans?” And Jesus responded, “No. I haven't made any other plans. I'm
counting on them!”
Our Lord is counting on US to tell His story and to share His love with
others. He is counting on each one of us, the Church, to be His hands and
feet, to be His instruments in passing on the Good News to the world!
Today we celebrate Mission Sunday and Our Lord has given us a
command and a privilege. He has honored us to be His ambassadors to tell
His story and to share that great love which knows no boundaries. We all
play an integral role in His plan of salvation for all people.
Can we do no less?

WHOLE COMMUNITY CATECHESIS
Supporting the Whole Community of Faith
Unable to shed their understanding of hierarchy, the
disciples continued to wonder who would be first in Jesus’
Kingdom. Some disciples wondered where they would sit,
in what order they would enter, and who would be greatest.
In today’s gospel, Zebedee’s sons, James and John were
wondering about such things. As he had before, Jesus
tried to get the point across that order in God’s Kingdom
was unlike the order found in this world. In order to be first
in the Kingdom of God, a person needed to serve others.
Jesus gave the disciples an example of this service, but still
they did not comprehend the message.
Families are in the best position to live this gospel
message. Parents have the most power, which makes it
easy for children to recognize when they are being served.
In simple, everyday actions, like getting our own drink of
water, changing the television channel ourselves, or helping
a child with his/her daily chores, children recognize their
parents respect and appreciate them. Children also watch
parent’s actions to see how they serve others. We all know
from our own experiences that the person we most admire
is the one who helps us carry our load, not the one who
adds to it.
Adults: How do I feel when I do something good and I am
not acknowledged? Why?
Children: Am I willing to help others even if nobody thanks
me for it? Why?
