The Arts Manager (Commissions) will work with the Arts Director to develop and manage an ongoing
programme of commissions linked to the Trust's refurbishment and redevelopment programme. She/he will
also manage aspects of the programme to develop a Commissions Strategy for incorporating art into the
design of the new hospital on the Whitechapel site and the redevelopment of St Bartholomew's Hospital, a
£1 billion PFI project.
As well as having extensive expertise in contemporary public arts practice and architectural developments,
the Arts Manager (Commissions) will need good negotiation and people management skills. She/he will
have experience of managing a range of budgets and local authority section 106 planning agreements.
He/she will need a proven track record in successful fundraising and experience of managing small teams
is essential.
The Arts Manager (Commissions) will be expected to deputise for the Arts Director when necessary.
This post is based in offices in Prescott Street, E1, but will involve travel between The Royal London site at
Whitechapel and Barts in the City. The ability to self-manage is therefore considered to be essential.

Key Responsibilities
Strategy Development

Develop, with the Director, the arts strategy that informs the development of site specific art
commissions for both the new hospital development and the retained estate, reflecting the ethos of Vital
Arts and the needs and aspirations of Barts & The London NHS Trust.

Develop the strategy that informs the art programme for specific Trust 1% for art Capital Projects.
Commissions Management

Work with the Director to identify sources of funding and raise money for New Hospital Arts Strategy

Work with Director to identify suitable artists and spaces for site specific and purchased artwork in the
new hospital

Develop the arts strategy for the Barts and The Royal London Children’s hospital

Ensure that the commissioning process is made accessible by working with artists to devise
opportunities for staff and users to get involved and contribute to decision making throughout the
process.

Develop project briefs for all art commissions and purchase strategies linked to refurbishment, rebuilds
and new builds and manage the recruitment and selection of artists.

Manage individual contracts for commissions and purchases, ensuring that all projects are high quality,
achieved on time and within budget

Manage the installation of all artwork, ensuring that it meets all health and safety, maintenance and
security requirements

Ensure that commissions are monitored, evaluated, and documented in accordance with Vital Arts
practice
General Duties



Oversee, mentor and line manage the Arts Assistant (Visual Arts) who delivers the exhibition
programme, art collection development and small scale visual arts projects.
Undertake advocacy work for the work of Vital Arts developing relevant national and international
networks
This post is self servicing and requires the post holder to undertake any routine admin duties associated
with working in a small team.
