Job Description : TEACHER OF MUSIC MPS
Responsible to:
Head of Music
Salary:
MPS 1-6 Salary £27,000 - £36,387 (inner London)
(Start September 2011)
STAFF:
a) To meet whole school requirements of policy and practice
b) Take responsibility to maintain their own professional development
COMMUNICATION:
a) Take an active role within the arts team – promoting the work of the music
department in terms of curricular, extra curricular and community activities.
b) In line with school policy and procedures – to set clear targets for all pupils within
the department at each key stage. Ensure that pupil progress is monitored and
intervention strategies put in place to address under-performance.
c) To communicate with other staff and parents as appropriate regarding information
about pupils’ work, progress, behaviour and attendance
RECORD KEEPING:
a) Assessment: ensure that all department information on pupil progress is maintained,
updated and reviewed in line with school policies.
CURRICULUM:
a) To work with the Head of Music on the development and implementation of the
departments curriculum, schemes of work and AFL
b) To keep up to date with developments within Music teaching
c) Ensure that pupils are entered for the appropriate examination at the required
level
d) To ensure that pupils within the gifted and talented spectrum are given
appropriate opportunities to excel, within Arts. To assess such pupils, put in place a
personal education plan with appropriate targets and to monitor closely their
progress.
e) To promote the use of ICT within the curriculum.
f) Have a commitment to developing their own professional practice in line with
whole school policy and developments.
RESOURCES/ENVIRONMENT:
a) Ensuring the maintenance, storing, and accessibility of all learning materials and
equipment
b) To ensure that equipment used is checked and maintained and meets all Health
& Safety requirements
c) Ensure that H&S regulations are followed within the department and in any activity
undertaken off the school site
d) Maintain a pleasant and visually stimulating environment within the classroom,
departmental area and the wider school environment
PUPILS:
a) To work with the Head of Music to insure that high standards of work and
behaviour are maintained within the department
b) To encourage pupils to develop their individual interests and talents both through
the curriculum and extra curricular activities.

c) To organise a variety of opportunities for students to take part in individual and
collaborative work at all key stages – these may include pre-school, lunch-time,
after-school or out of school sessions.
d) To support students in their academic work with additional support sessions outside
the normal contact time.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Teacher of Music









Must have Qualified Teacher Status.
Have a passion for music performance and nurturing the talents of all
students.
Be able to develop and implement ideas to encourage wider participation.
Assist the Head of Music and 2nd in-charge in assessing, reviewing and
developing the curriculum offer at Key Stage 3, 4 and 5
Assist the Head of Music and 2nd in-charge in delivering the department
development plan
Have a commitment to supporting out of hours provision – such as
enrichment and extra-curricular activities.
Have a commitment to supporting and attending music concerts.
Be willing to develop and extend their knowledge of current music ICT
software such as Reason, Garageband and Logic
Have a passion for contemporary musical forms and a desire to engage with
students own musical interests.
Be a reflective teacher with a commitment to developing a creative approach to
teaching and a desire to nurture the creativity of students.
