Course Grading and Policies
93-100 = A, 90-92 = A-, 87-89 = B+, 83-86 = B, 80-82 = B-, 77-79 = C+, 73-76 = C, 70-72 = C-, 67-69 = D+, 63-66 = D, 60-62 = D-, <60 = F.
Attendance and Safety:
 No one is admitted to lab after the first 10 minutes or without closed toe shoes, lab manual or safety
glasses.
 You must attend your scheduled lab. There are no make-up labs. If you miss a lab, you will receive a score of
0 for that day. At the end of the semester, your lowest lab grade will be dropped. If you miss three or more
labs (including those for which you were more than 10 minutes late) you will receive a grade of “F” for the
entire course.
 Any student who does has not taken and received a passing grade for CHML211 will be administratively
withdrawn from the course.
Lab Quizzes (50%):
 4 short lab quizzes will be given, testing on 2-4 experiments each. Study guides will be provided on the course
website.
 There will be a full lab experiment after every lab quiz.
 There are no make-up quizzes; however the lowest lab quiz score will be dropped.
Laboratory Notebook (~10%)
 Your notebook will consist of pre-lab and in-lab entries as described in class, in Appendix C in the lab manual,
and on the course website.
 Each student will submit yellow carbon pages containing pre-lab notebook entries at the beginning of the lab
period, and yellow carbon pages containing in-lab entries attached to the final lab report when submitted.
Laboratory Reports (~30%)
 Due dates will be announced by lab instructor.
 Late lab reports will receive a penalty of 5% of total grade per day. Unless previously arranged with
instructor, once graded lab reports are returned to students, no more lab reports will be accepted.
Lab Technique (~10%)
 Up to 10% of the final grade for each experiment will be based on technique. In order to receive the
maximum score on the technique portion of your grade, you must do the following:









Keep up with the glassware from your lab drawer. Return it to the lab drawer clean and dry, as well as to the drawer from
which it came.
Keep your work area clean and clean up after yourself. Equipment cords must be unplugged, wrapped, and the equipment
pushed to the back of the hood before leaving.
Bring your own safety goggles and wear them at all times while in the lab.
Come to lab prepared to do an experiment, having prelab completed, and ready to participate in the experiment.
Write things down in your lab notebook as you do the experiment.
Be sure to submit samples to instructor when required. This applies to samples for instrumental analysis and samples for
storage. If you throw out your samples too early, you will not have all of the results needed to complete an assignment.
Turn in materials on time.
Be safe! Be familiar with the hazards of the chemicals to be used during an experiment.
Obey your safety contract at all times!
*** At the end of the semester, each student will be responsible for the contents and cleanliness of their lab
drawers. Any student leaving their assigned lab drawer missing glassware, or with dirty glassware, will be
penalized on their technique grade, resulting in a lower lab grade. ***
Use of Personal Electronics
 Cell phone use will not be tolerated in this class. Turn off your cell phones prior to class. If your cell
phone rings, you will be asked to leave the class. Refusal to identify the source of the ringing will result in
dismissal for the entire class, with the entire class receiving a zero for the lab.
 Laptops and desktop computer use is allowed for lab related materials ONLY. Any student seen engaging
in non-laboratory related activity will be asked to leave the class, and will receive a zero for the lab.
Learning Outcomes
 A student taking this course in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at UNCW will demonstrate
the ability to perform laboratory-based experiments, utilizing appropriate equipment, applying proper
procedures and adhering to safety guidelines
Academic Integrity
 All members of UNCW’s community are expected to follow the academic Honor Code. Please read the

form will not be tolerated in this class.

represent them as your own.
Students with Disabilities
 Students with diagnosed disabilities should contact the Office of Disability Services (962-7555). Please
submit a copy of the letter you receive from Office of Disability Services detailing class accommodations
you may need. If you require accommodation for test-taking, please be sure to have referral letter
submitted no less than 3 days before the test.
