LOCUM CONSULTANT ORTHOPAEDICS IN FOOT AND ANKLE SURGERY GLASGOW ROYAL INFIRMARY INFORMATION PACK REF: 29697D CLOSING DATE: NOON 19TH JULY 2013 www.nhsggc.org.uk/medicaljobs SUMMARY INFORMATION POST: LOCUM CONSULTANT ORTHOPAEDICS IN FOOT AND ANKLE SURGERY BASE: GLASGOW ROYAL INFIRMARY Available from August 2013 for 6 months (potential to extend to 1 year) We are seeking a Locum Consultant to cover the Maternity Leave of one of the substantive Foot and Ankle consultants at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. The postholder will work closely with Mr. C. Senthil Kumar, Consultant Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon. There will be excellent opportunities for research and operating as well as training in specialist procedures with Mr Kumar such as ankle replacement, hindfoot fusion, fixation of complex fractures, tendon transfer, complex deformity correction, diabetic foot management and the whole range of modern forefoot surgery. With its central location, Glasgow Royal Infirmary attracts a significant volume of complex tertiary referrals in foot and ankle problems there are 2 substantive foot and ankle Consultant surgeons responsible for delivering the foot and ankle service in addition to a team of 2 Specialist Podiatrists and Nurses. The foot and ankle team prides itself on its research output with numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals each year, as well as many podium presentations and posters at national and international meetings. Excellent facilities exist for basic science research in collaboration with the Anatomy Department at Glasgow University and the Bioengineering Departments at Glasgow Caledonian and Strathclyde Universities. You will be expected to contribute to the on-call rota at Consultant level. Candidates must have full GMC registration and a licence to practice. NHS GREATER GLASGOW & CLYDE SURGERY & ANAESTHETICS DIRECTORATE LOCUM CONSULTANT ORTHOPAEDIC SURGEON WITH SPECIALIST INTEREST IN FOOT & ANKLE SURGERY GLASGOW ROYAL INFIRMARY HOSPITAL AND CLINICS WHERE SERVICES ARE TO BE PROVIDED Glasgow Royal Infirmary is a University teaching hospital located in the east of Glasgow. The Directorate of Orthopaedics (East) is based at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. The population served is approximately 340,000. There are currently 13 Substantive Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons in the Unit where the full range of trauma and elective orthopaedic sub-specialties is covered. The orthopaedic wards at Glasgow Royal Infirmary are located in newly built accommodation adjacent to both A & E and to the regional plastic surgery and burns service. Inpatient facilities for both trauma and elective work are based here. There are three laminar flow theatres for Elective Orthopaedic work. The trauma theatre at Glasgow Royal Infirmary is also located in the main theatre suite and is available 24 hours a day for the management of Orthopaedic and soft tissue trauma. Day surgery sessions for Orthopaedics are also used within Glasgow Royal Infirmary however these sessions will transfer to the new Ambulatory Care Hospital (ACH) on the Stobhill site in June 2009. Elective Orthopaedic and Fracture clinics are based at Glasgow Royal Infirmary with a dedicated X-ray facility and medical records department. The processing of patients through the Outpatient department is greatly facilitated by extended role Specialist Orthopaedic Physiotherapists and Podiatrists who initially assess a high proportion of referrals from Primary care. A total of 38 sessions per week of Specialist Physiotherapist time is allocated to this task. Post-operative follow-up for is conducted by the Outcomes Assessment Service staffed by nurse practitioners. Currently all primary and revision arthroplasty, soft tissue knee and arthroscopy patients are followed by this service with uniform data collected onto a database. The Stobhill Ambulatory Care Hospital (ACH) opened in June 2009 with a significant proportion of day surgery and 23 hour surgery being transferred there. This exciting development has involved redesign of current working practices in order to allow a streamlined service provision over two sites. Glasgow Royal Infirmary is a major teaching hospital and has all major specialties on site with the exception of Neurosurgery and Cardiothoracic surgery. There is an excellent Intensive Care Unit run by the Anaesthetic Department at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. The Centre for Rheumatic Diseases is a professorial unit based at Glasgow Royal Infirmary and enjoys a close relationship with the Orthopaedic Department. There are close ties with the University of Strathclyde Department of Bio-Engineering and the National Centre for Prosthetics and Orthotics. The Consultant members of the department are involved in Undergraduate teaching for the University of Glasgow. The Unit is also recognised for Basic Surgical Training and for Higher Surgical Training in Trauma and Orthopaedics. Currently there are 10 ST 3 and above trainees and 8 at the more junior level. There is a postgraduate teaching programme for higher surgical trainees organised on a West of Scotland basis. Education is strongly supported within the unit with regular multi-disciplinary trauma meetings, educational meetings and a monthly audit meeting. WORK OF THE DEPARTMENT 13 consultants [see section 3 (b) (ii)] 18 junior medical staff [see section 3 (b) (iii)]. HOURS OF DUTY Full Time 40.00 SUPERANNUATION You have the option to join the NHS Superannuation Scheme, to participate in the State Earnings Related Pension Scheme or to take out a Personal Pension. Employee’s contributions to the NHS Scheme are Tiered based on your earnings and the employers contribution equates to 13.5 % of salary. Employees in the NHS Scheme are “Contracted-out” of the State Earnings Related Pension Scheme and pay a lower rate of National Insurance contributions. Employees who choose to participate in the State Earnings Related Pension Scheme pay the higher rate of National Insurance contribution. A Stakeholder Pension is also available. A Personal Pension is a private arrangement agreed with the pension provider that will be an organisation such as a Bank, Building Society or Insurance Company.
