SUMMARY INFORMATION
POST: CONSULTANT ORTHOPAEDIC SURGEON
BASE: WESTERN INFIRMARY/GARTNAVEL GENERAL HOSPITAL
We are seeking to recruit a substantive Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with
specialist interests in orthopaedic trauma surgery and lower limb arthroplasty
surgery. The post holder will initially be based at the Western Infirmary, Glasgow.
The opening of the new South Glasgow Hospital in 2015 will result in reconfiguration
of orthopaedic services in the whole Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board area.
It is expected that the successful candidate will be involved in the development of the
orthopaedic trauma provision at the new hospital, in addition to support of the lower

who have specialist fellowship training in orthopaedic trauma surgery and lower limb
elective/arthroplasty surgery.
There will be a review of all services prior to the opening of the new hospital that may
affect all sites and staff within GG&C which could mean working from different
site/sites.
Applicants must have full GMC registration and a licence to practise. Those trained in
the UK should have evidence of higher Specialist Training leading to a CCT or
eligibility for specialist registration (CESR) or be within six months of confirmed entry

WESTERN INFIRMARY, GLASGOW
CONSULTANT ORTHOPAEDIC SURGEON
REF: 32188D
1. Brief Description of the Acute Services Division of NHS Greater Glasgow and
Clyde
The Acute Division of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is the largest
group of adult acute hospitals in Scotland. We provide a wide range of
services from community-based care through to the full range of
general hospital services.
There is a significant amount of complex surgical work carried out, as
we are home to a number of the country’s tertiary and national
services. Glasgow is also home to the world famous Beatson oncology
centre.
We enjoy close links with Glasgow’s three universities and make a
significant contribution to teaching at both undergraduate and
postgraduate level. Research also has a high profile within the
organisation. Excellent facilities for students and their tutors are
provided in the brand new, £15 million, state of the art, Wolfson
Medical School, based at Glasgow University adjacent to the Western
Infirmary site.
Employing more than 14,300 staff, we serve a core catchment
population of 560,000. Our patients not only come from Greater
Glasgow and Clyde but also, in some instances, from the whole of the
West of Scotland and for our national services, from the whole of
Scotland.
We have eight hospitals north of the River Clyde, all with teaching
responsibilities: Glasgow Royal Infirmary (including Princess Royal
Maternity Hospital), Western Infirmary, Stobhill Hospital, Gartnavel
General Hospital, Glasgow Dental Hospital and School, Drumchapel
Hospital, Blawarthill Hospital and Lightburn Hospital. South of the river
are the Southern General Hospital and the Victoria Infirmary. The Royal
Alexandra Hospital is in Paisley, the Inverclyde Royal Hospital is in
Greenock and the Vale of Leven District General Hospital is situated in
Alexandria.
With an annual budget of over one billion pounds this is a particularly
exciting time to be joining NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. Over the
next decade there is planned investment of more than £750 million, this
is the largest single investment programme in the history of NHS
Scotland – giving NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde hospital
accommodation for 21st Century health care.
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde plans to develop a new pattern of
Accident & Emergency Services for Glasgow that will see:
 Specialist Accident & Emergency and Orthopaedic teams sited 24
hours a day at two centres of excellence – Glasgow Royal Infirmary
and Southern General Hospital;
 New rapid access for GP emergency referrals; and
 Five Minor Injury Units staffed by nurse practitioners under the
guidance of Accident & Emergency Consultants at Glasgow Royal
Infirmary, Gartnavel General Hospital, Southern General Hospital
and at the Ambulatory Care Hospitals to be built at Stobhill Hospital
and the Victoria Infirmary.
2 Hospital and Clinics Where Services are to be provided
The Western Infirmary is a University teaching hospital located in the
west end of Glasgow. The orthopaedic department serves a local
catchment population of approximately 320,000, and provides tertiary
service in the subspecialties.
There are currently 12 Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons in substantive
posts in the Unit with the full range of orthopaedic sub-specialties
covered.
Outpatient clinics and trauma work are carried out at the Western
Infirmary, with a 30 bed trauma receiving ward and a fully staffed
dedicated trauma theatre. Outpatient clinics are supported by
extended scope nurse and physiotherapy practitioners, with new and
return outpatient clinics and an arthroplasty outcomes service.
Elective operating is carried out at Gartnavel Hospital, with 3 laminar
flow theatres and a day surgery theatre dedicated to orthopaedic
work. There is a pre-operative assessment clinic dedicated to elective
orthopaedic patients, and two orthopaedic wards with a total of 42
beds.
Whilst this post is advertised for and will commence at the Western Infirmary
Greater Glasgow & Clyde is undergoing significant and exciting change with
the completion of a new build hospital at the Southern General Site. The
move should start to take place in May 2015. There will be a review of all
services prior to the opening of the new hospital that may affect all sites and
staff within GG&C.
The department has close links with the Rheumatology service, which is
based at Gartnavel Hospital. The regional oncology service for the
West of Scotland at the new Beatson Centre is located on the
Gartnavel site. As a result, the department has the largest workload
dealing with bony metastastic disease of any orthopaedic unit in the
country. There are close ties also with the Imaging Department with
ready access to both CT and MRI scanning, including a dedicated
extremity scanner.
There are close ties with the University of Strathclyde Department of BioEngineering and the National Centre for Prosthetics and Orthotics.
The Consultant members of the department are involved in
Undergraduate teaching for the University of Glasgow. The Unit is also
recognised for Basic Surgical Training and for Higher Surgical Training in
Trauma and Orthopaedics. Currently there are 7 higher surgical
trainees with 4 senior SHOs and 4FY2 and FY1 trainees in the
department. There is a postgraduate teaching programme for higher
surgical trainees organised on a West of Scotland basis. Education is
strongly supported within the unit with regular trauma meeting,
