services to children/young people with complex needs. Applications are invited from suitably
qualified individuals resident in the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland for the following
position.
CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST
2 – 3 DAYS PER WEEK
Essential Criteria:
1.
Doctoral Degree or equivalent accepted by the British Psychological Society or equivalent body.
Must be HPC registered (or equivalent) and eligible for registration as a Chartered Psychologist
with the British Psychological Society or equivalent.
OR
Professional Social Work qualification and accreditation with NISCC, and Masters Level Postqualification training in an area directly relevant to the provision of Child/family therapy.

Minimum of 2 years post qualifying experience of therapeutic working within a child-related
specialism.
Experience of working with Children in Residential Care
Evidence of continuing professional development through e.g. Courses, Training
Hold a full current and valid driving licence and have access to a car
Position on salary scales will depend on levels of qualification and relevant experience.

Clinical Psychologist

JOB PURPOSE:
The Clinical Psychologist will work as part of the Clinical Psychology led multidisciplinary therapeutic support team for children and young people who are
in residential care. The main aim of the Therapeutic support team is to
promote and enhance the mental health and emotional well-being of young
people in care by facilitating and fostering placement stability and primary
attachments. We do this by working collaboratively with young people, the
residential managers and staff, field work staff and other relevant agencies
including CAMHS. We offer a range of services to our residential care homes
such as weekly clinical staff surgeries, individual clinical supervision, and
case consultations to include field work staff, reflective practice workshops
and training. Furthermore, we conduct clinical assessments on children and
young people as well as direct clinical interventions, art psychotherapy
assessments and direct art therapy sessions.
The Post Holder will provide assessment, intervention, consultation and
training services to staff and children and young people.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. To provide specialist assessment of the emotional and psychological wellbeing needs of children and young people in care based upon the
appropriate use, interpretation and integration of data from a variety of
sources including psychological tests, self-report measures, direct and
indirect observation and interviews with service users, family members
and residential care workers.
2. To formulate and implement plans for therapeutic/psychological
intervention based on appropriate conceptual frameworks.
3. When appropriate to work with the young person’s birth family. This may
be where a child/young person is returning home, or where s/he is moving
on to another placement.
4. When appropriate to help birth families to develop parenting skills and
apply them in their contact/access visits with the young person, or to living
at home where rehabilitation is possible.
5. To provide training, advice and consultation to other professionals in
relevant areas.
6. To exercise professional responsibility within Ashdale Care Ireland for the
assessment and treatment of services users whose behaviours are
managed by therapeutic/psychological planning and provision.
7. To contribute specialist psychological perspectives to case-planning and
multi-agency conferences and reviews as appropriate.
8. To communicate highly complex condition-related, contentious or sensitive
information where there may be significant barriers to acceptance, and to
manage ensuing difficult interpersonal situations in the interests of the
child/young person’s welfare.
9. When appropriate, to provide specialist assessment of birth families and
relationships between the young people and their birth families, including
extended family to contribute to understandings of need, risk and careplanning requirements.
10. To work as part of the Therapeutic staff team and co-ordinate all
interventions with the clinical lead to ensure adherence to agreed models
of practice. This will involve receiving regular clinical supervision in
accordance with good practice and professional guidelines.
Management and Service Development
11. To develop systems for assessment of young people and families, and for
the development, delivery and monitoring of treatment plans, integrating
care and treatment across service and agency boundaries.
12. To develop systems for auditing team practices, and evaluating outcomes.
13. To attend staff team meetings within our Residential Care homes and staff
clinical surgeries and Management meetings within Ashdale House.
Teaching, Training, Supervision
14. To receive regular professional/clinical supervision where appropriate.
15. To take responsibility for own continuing professional development and
continue to gain wider post-qualification experience of theoretical and
practice issues in service-related areas.
16. To provide advice, consultation and training to foster carers, social care
workers and other colleagues as and when appropriate.
Clinical Governance and Research
17. To utilise evidence-based literature and research to support effective
practice.
18. To undertake project management including audit and service evaluation
with colleagues within the service to help develop service provision.
19. To participate in evaluation of all therapeutic/clinical activity within the post
and provide such information as required for the purpose of service
monitoring and evaluation.
20. To contribute to the research and development activities of Therapeutic
Staff Team, undertaking research and providing research advice as
appropriate.
21. To publish research outcomes in professional recognised journals and
share information on outcomes at professional conferences where
appropriate.
22. To represent a professional view point in relation to nationally accepted
good practice and to ensure a high level of ethical standards and
professional conduct.
