OPTIMIST CLUB NEWSLETTER
NOTES FROM YOUR
PRESIDENT
It is hard to believe this Optimist year is quickly coming to a close. This will be
my last MESSAGE as president, so I want to say how much I appreciate all of
your help and support as we sought to be a “FRIEND OF YOUTH” by
“BRINGING OUT THE BEST IN KIDS”. I especially want to say thanks to Sue
Wood, Secretary/Treasurer, for her diligence in keeping up with the paperwork
and keeping the Board and club on track. She as carried out her duties well!
October 1, 2002 begins the 56th year of the Frankfort Optimist Club. Not many
clubs can boast of this kind of longevity, but let me hasten to say it is not just
that there has been a club--it has been an active club. Let each one of us resolve
to build on the rich history behind us to make the future even brighter for our
youth and members.
As President Michael Smith leads us, let us pledge him our support and work to
make Frankfort a community “WHERE EVERY KID COUNTS”. This is the
theme of International President Bill Teague for 2002 – 2003. We are with you
Michael! Congratulations and success.

The Optimist Creed
RICK HAYDON ON INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE
Promise YourselfTo be so strong that nothing can
disturb your peace of mind.
To talk health, happiness and
prosperity to every person you
meet.
To make all your friends feel that
there is something in them.
To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism
come true.
To think only of the best, to work
only for the best and to expect only the best.
To be just as enthusiastic about
the success of others as you are
about your own.
To forget the mistakes of the
past and press on to the greater
achievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful countenance
at all times and give every living
creature you meet a smile.
To give so much time to the improvement of yourself, that you
have no time to criticize others.
To be too large for worry, too
noble for anger, too strong for fear,
and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
Congratulations to Frankfort Optimist Club Past President and Outstanding
Distinguished Governor Rick Haydon for being selected to serve on the International Leadership Development Committee.
JUNIOR OPTIMISTS
The Junior Optimists are getting ready to start their new year also. We are
making an effort to speak at Parent Teacher Association/Organization meetings
in an effort to let more parents and schools know that these kids do community
service while learning leadership skills. If there is a school that wants their own
club all they have to do is provide a parent or school staff to join the FOC and
sponsor the club. The Junior Optimist Club would then be covered by the Optimist liability insurance for all activities. Junior Optimist are kids in grades 4 –
8.
MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR PAUL B. WOODS
Kentucky State University will hold a service in memory of
Paul B. Woods, former chairperson for the Division of Education and Human Services and a member of the Frankfort Optimist Club since 1999, from 11 a.m. to noon September 5 in
Bradford Hall Little Theater. Everyone is invited to attend.
INFORMATION OF SEPTEMBER PROGRAMS WILL BE FILLED
IN LATER. JOE RAY GATEWOOD IS PROGRAM CHAIR.
WELCOME NEW MEMBER SUSAN CUNNINGHAM. A MEMBERSHIP ROSTER IS ATTATCHED TO

Dr. Harry J. Cowherd Service to Youth Award/Officer Installation Dinner
Reservations will be taken beginning on Tuesday, September 3, for our dinner to honor the recipient of this year’s Dr. Harry
J. Cowherd Service to Youth Award and to also install next year’s club officers. The dinner is scheduled for Tuesday, October 1, 2002, at 6:30 PM in the upstairs room at Completely Kentucky, 237 West Broadway. The menu includes baked chicken breast, rice, green beans, bread, drinks and dessert—all for only $10. You must pay for your meal before the dinner; reservations will not be taken after Tuesday, September 24. If you want to mail your check for the dinner, please make it payable to Frankfort Optimist Club and mail to Ronnie Dunn, 101 Bradburn Court, Frankfort, KY 40601.
The deadline for nominations for the Dr. Harry J. Cowherd Service to Youth is September 7, 2002. To qualify, nominations
must be at least 18 years of age, must not be a member of an Optimist Club, and must not be compensated for their work
with the young people they serve.
BOOKS AND TOYS FOR FAMILY COURT
Club members are asked to help the Franklin County Family Court provide a book or toy for every child before the court.
You may bring the books and toys to club meetings and they will be delivered, or you may drop them off at the Family
Court. If you drop them, off let them know you are with the Frankfort Optimist Club. This is a great project for the club.
HAVE YOU NOTICED?
Ever notice that the people who are late are often much jollier than the people who have to wait for them?
Most of us go to our grave with our music still inside of us.
If Walmart is lowering prices every day, how come nothing is free yet?
You may be only one person in the world, but you may also be the world to one person.
Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.
Don’t cry because it’s over; smile because it happened.
We could learn a lot from crayons: some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some have weird names, and all are different colors…but they all exist very nicely in the same box.
A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.
Have an awesome day, and know that someone who thinks you’re great has thought about you today!
