BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The National Centre for Craft & Design is a world class venue, the largest in England,
entirely dedicated to the exhibition, celebration and promotion of international craft and design.
Situated in a former seed warehouse in Sleaford, a Lincolnshire market town, the Centre boasts five
exhibition spaces; a vibrant public learning and events programme; an innovative craft shop; a
licensed café and a roof-top viewing balcony.
An opportunity has arisen for a recent graduate to work at The NCCD as a Gallery Assistant. The
regular working days are Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 0915 to 1715. The post is for 10
months from August 2013 to May 2014.
We are looking for a bright individual with a genuine enthusiasm for arts and culture, to join our
exhibition team and support all areas of its increasing activity.
The post of Gallery Assistant will suit someone hoping to start or consolidate their career in the
gallery/museum sector. It will provide a broad overview of working within a contemporary exhibition
venue from learning how to handle/install/present artworks and develop exhibitions, through to
liaising with artists/members of the public and marketing exhibitions.

The post is employed through Leisure in the Community Trust who delivers North Kesteven District
Council's cultural services contract.

JOB PURPOSE
To provide a high quality customer service enriching the visitor experience in the Roof Gallery
(and/or Main Gallery) and ensure that both the exhibits and members of the public remain safe at all
times. To provide project, research and administrative support the exhibitions programme.
KEY TASKS
Customer service and care (Daily)
 To actively welcome and engage visitors to the gallery in conversation, enriching the visitor
experience and offering details about forthcoming special events and responding to any
exhibition queries.
 To actively invigilate the Roof Gallery (and/or Main Gallery) to ensure both the exhibits, and the
members of the public remain safe at all times
Gallery set up/maintenance (Daily)
 To prepare the Roof Gallery/ExChange Space (and/or Main Gallery) each morning before the
building opens to the public.
To ensure that:  mechanical and electronic elements in the gallery are in good working order;
 exhibits remain secure (checked against an object check list);
 the gallery is clean and well presented;
 all spot lights are working;
 hand outs/ questionnaires/ interactive materials/ promotional marketing is well
stocked.
Support exhibition installation (Occasional)
 To support the exhibition team in all elements of gallery installation when required. Including:
 gallery/ plinth preparation and maintenance;
 condition checking,
 wrapping and packing exhibitions;
 laying out exhibits and creating displays;
 lighting and audio visual.
Projects & Marketing (Regular)
 To support the wider team when required:
 conduct audience development research with visitors
 update distribution and marketing lists as required
 collate visitor information and produce monthly reports to present to the wider team
 contribute ideas on audience development and social media
 data recording of workshop evaluation forms- providing data to the Head of Learning
 contribute to the provision and presentation of gallery based learning activities
 support the wider exhibitions team with curatorial research
Health and Safety
 To support the safe evacuation of the building in the event of an emergency
 Report any dangerous incidents or potential hazards
Other (occasional)
 Contribute to the development of the organisation through active participation in staff meetings.
 Provide cover for colleagues leave and sickness absence within the wider team
 To support the wider team and contributing ideas for future special events programmes
 To undertake any other duties commensurate with the level and nature of the post.
Training
Additional training opportunities can be provided to support the postholder with related tasks (lifting
and handling, customer care, etc
PERSON SPECIFICATION









A degree in fine art or applied arts
An appreciation and understanding of contemporary art/ craft and design.
Basic computer skills specifically Word, Excel and Email
An understanding of handling artwork and exhibition installation
Good attention to detail
Accuracy in written and verbal communication
A willingness to learn
Ability to work as a member of a team
Customer care skills

Salary
Hourly rate is £6.19 per hour
Car Allowance
A mileage allowance of £0.20 for diesel and £0.24 for petrol per mile will be reimbursed for all
travel carried out for work purposes
Office Hours
22.5 hours per week (3 days) minimum to include Saturday to Monday from 0915 to 1715
Hours may be increased to provide support across the organisation, as-and-when required
basis.
Holidays
The annual holiday entitlement is 9 days
Sickness
Sickness absence will not be paid for first 3 days of absence; there on entitlement to sick pay
will be in accordance with the appropriate rate of Statutory Sick Pay.
