Anxiety Disorders Association of Victoria presents “Don’t Panic!” Managing Panic & Agoraphobia An information session with Dr Scott Blair-West, Consultant Psychiatrist Overview: Dr Blair-West will present information on the symptoms, nature and natural history of panic focusing specifically on the panic attack itself and all of the subtle safety behaviours and avoidance behaviours that complicate the problem and make it so hard to change. A discussion on complications due to other anxiety symptoms and depression will follow, leading into practical and simple non-drug treatments options. He will discuss slowbreathing approaches, cognitive strategies and then focus mainly on all forms of exposure therapy particularly on exposure to the physical symptoms themselves. Dr Blair-West will finish with information on drug therapies, selfhelp materials and finally, questions. Key Therapy Strategies: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy About the presenter: Dr Blair-West trained at the Austin Hospital completing his specialist qualifications in Psychiatry in 1993. He subsequently worked as lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry in the consultation liaison department for 5 years, whilst starting a private practice specialising in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for anxiety disorders especially OCD. He has been in full time private practice since 1998 and has been the Medical Director of the Anxiety and Depression Program (ADP) at The Melbourne Clinic since 2002. He now specializes in comprehensive management of anxiety disorders, developing new intensive inpatient programmes for OCD, novel treatment approaches for OCD and CBT supervision for psychiatrists and psychiatry trainees. He regularly teaches Anxiety Disorder Management and CBT to trainees, psychologists and psychiatrist colleagues and talks to community and self-help organizations on anxiety-related issues.
