Q&As – MELBOURNE-LANCEFIELD ROAD SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS What works have started? VicRoads has commenced a project to install approximately 9 kilometres of safety barriers along Melbourne-Lancefield Rd. What works are included in the project? Installation of 5.1 kilometres of wire rope safety barrier Installation of 4.2 kilometres of guard fence Installation of 17.8 kilometres of profiled edge line marking Shoulder sealing between Sunbury Rd and Konagaderra Rd Installation of right turn treatments at Gellies Rd, Clarke Court, Williamsons Rd and Konagaderra Rd Sealing of 38 driveway bellmouths Removal of 35 trees Line marking upgrades Where are the works located? Along Melbourne-Lancefield Rd between Sunbury Rd, Sunbury and Station St, Clarkefield. How much was spent on the project? $4.25 million. Why are the works being conducted? These works, funded under the Safer Roads Infrastructure Program, specifically target run-off-road crashes by reducing the risk and severity of vehicles crashing into roadside hazards. What are the benefits to road users? The installation of wire rope safety barrier and guard fence will help protect motorists from impacts with significant roadside hazards such as trees, power poles and culverts Shoulder sealing will provide an improved opportunity for motorists to regain control of the vehicle before impact with roadside hazards Profile edge line marking alerts drivers to the danger of leaving the road The installation of four right turn treatments will provide a safer opportunity for vehicles turning right and also for vehicles passing the vehicle making the right hand turn The sealing of 38 driveway entrances will help reduce the amount of debris being brought onto the road surface which reduces the skid resistance and creates significant hazards for motorcyclists The removal of trees close to the road will eliminate roadside hazards When is the expected completion date? February 2012. How many incidents have occurred over the past decade? Over the past decade there have been a total of 23 crashes along the specified length of road, resulting in 4 fatalities, 9 serious injury crashes and 10 ‘other‘ injury crashes. Of these crashes, 11 were run-off-road crashes resulting in 2 fatalities, 6 serious injury crashes and 3 ‘other’ injury crashes. Are there any potential aspects of this project that may be of media interest? The removal of 35 trees will eliminate roadside hazards and therefore reduce the likelihood of a run-off-road casualty crash.
