Abstract
The paper draws on research carried out under the umbrella of an ECfunded project which focused, amongst other things, on the way in which a
range of ‘publics’, in a number of European countries (Spain, France,
Lithuania, Hungary, Italy, Britain and Norway), reflect on the possibilities of,
and limitations to, new reproductive and genetic technologies. To what
extent are developments in biotechnology shifting, or impinging upon,
understandings of kinship in Europe? The paper focuses on the Euro part of
‘Euro-American’ - a term frequently used in a (re)emerging anthropological
interest in kinship - and makes a start at unpacking some of the similarities
and differences in ‘kinship thinking’ across different European sites. To
what extent is there a pan-European sensibility or ideology of relatedness?
How far does genealogical thinking rely on genetic knowledge?
