Recycling of electronics waste Summary of project: electronic waste are complex of different devises such as CPU, parts of computers i.e. circuits mobile phones, as well as some parts of microwaves , washing machines etc. these parts are useless due to any reason , and now a days, electronic wastes are the fastest source of waste production. The short life cycle of computerized parts in one hand and the diversification wants of people in other hand changed the issue of electronic waste to one of the biggest problems of the world. Only in Iran there are 4 million computers which their life cycle has ended. Manufacturing of a simple monitor cost 240 kg of fuel, 22 kg of chemical substances, and 1500 liter of water, except than raw materials! By considering this point, it seems that reuse of computerized devices can cause a big frugality and saving in our natural resources. every desk computer contains: 32% plastic, almost 7% lead, 41% aluminum, 0/0014 % gold, 20% iron, o/o189% silver and some other heavy and dangerous metals such as: mercury , cadmium, and arsenic. Burning or burying them will cause to the entrance of heavy substances in to underground waters or emission of toxic gases in to the atmosphere. Therefore recycling organization of Mashhad municipality planed and executes the recycling project of electronic waste to protect the environment. Details 1 the method of recycling based on the hydromethology along with combined methods of piromethology and mechanics. Some parts of this mythology are as below: the first phase of recycling of electronic waste is called separation and decontamination In this phase different parts of electronic wastes which mostly include: monitors, printed circuits, plastics. Metal parts, glasses, cables and mixed waste, segregate from each another Then, the parts capable of more recycling process will send to its section for further recycling. the remaining parts first will be decontaminate and will be send to user companies after packaging, as an output of recycling project. Circuits are important in environmental points of view, because they contain some dangerous elements such as lead, and also has great economical value due to having some precious elements such as gold, silver, and palladium. Recycling of circuits is one of the most complicated and sensitive phases in electronic waste recycling. In our innovative technical knowledge, at first the solder will remove, then, silver and copper will segregate. The gold will be sediment in final stage. The remaining portion will be decontaminated first, then, bury according to standards. The CRT monitors create a large portion of electronic waste. To recycling of this part first, their frames will remove and after grinding and packaging will be selling out. In second phase, the front side of picture lamp will be cut and separate from its back side. 2 The front side has a fluorescent layer, which collect by sucking machines. The remaining parts will be sale out after grinding and packaging. The back side of picture lamp has a layer of mercury which will be separate and the remaining elements will be sell out after grinding and packaging. The collected layers of fluorescent and mercury will be burying according to standard manner. The plastic wastes include: monitors, frames, radios frame, and some other parts. There are 5 types of plastics in electronic waste called ABS, PC, ABS/PC, PPO. The plastic parts will be sell out after segregation, washing and packaging. In case of extruder machine existence, we can extrude the plastic parts and sell them in a better price, Recycling of cables and wires need its own special machinery. Any kind of wires and cables waste will be the input of machinery which change them in to pure copper and plastic output, after grinding process inside of machinery. In case of absence of machineries the waste will packed and sell out to companies which own these machineries. Batteries contain some toxic as well as precious metals such as cobalt, lithium, and nickel. Recycling of batteries has a great importance for environment. The common process of batteries recycling start with its grinding. Then the aluminum, plastic parts and the iron will segregate by magnetic separator and swirly circulation. In next level some elements such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, cadmium and croom will obtain by dissolving methods. The remaining waste will be bury according to standard manner. 3 The mixed waste includes: small electronic parts which their re assembling is not economical. Therefore this waste should be grind and segregate to plastic, iron, aluminum, and other metals. Filtration and purification of sewage filtration and purification of sewage is the final phase of project and the out coming sewage must be according to the standard methods. Targets of project Reducing the dangers of electronic waste burying such as contamination of underground water unpurification of leachate biologically maintaining the soil resources by reducing in quantity of burial waste prevent the entrance of hazardous substances in to soil economize in fuel, water, and other natural resources consumption reuse of electronic devises exploitation of precious metals and prevention of their entrée in to the environment employment creation for youth New aspects 1. Absolutely indigenous process and environmental friendly 2. lees installation cost and expenditures 4 3. highly controllable and foreseeable 4. flexibility of process according to entrance volume of waste 5. capability of recycling the precious metal with high sufficiency 6. availability of raw material 7. modern technology 8. independence of technology 9. no dependency to foreign technology This process has been executed in Iran for the first time. There are more advantages of this process which has mentioned below: EXPENDITURES AND REVENUES This project has been executed regarding to importance of environment and all phases has executed according to latest standards. In economical point of view this project is not reasonable for electronic waste of Mashhad city. But the organization started it due to preservation and extension of clean Earth culture. Now, people are more concern about these wastes, after getting awareness of its dangerous. REPEATABILITY 5 By considering the problems of electronic waste, this idea is a necessary approach in Iran and the accomplished project in Mashhad can be a suitable and apply able model to follow. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS The environmental aspect of electronic waste recycling is very important technical knowledge due to hazardous and dangerous elements. Using sewage filtration systems and recovery systems will restrict the egression of these elements. this process has designed in such a way that will prevent the emission of polluting gas in to the air. 6
