UNITY COLLEGE Job Description TITLE: Waste/Recycling Technician FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt DEPARTMENT: President’s Office (Sustainability) REPORTS TO: Sustainability Coordinator POSTION SUMMARY: Perform manual work necessary to support the recycling, compost, and other waste programs. Implement, coordinate, and monitor waste management and recycling programs. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Under the supervision of the Sustainability Coordinator, coordinate and monitor integrated solid waste management programs 2. Collect, sort, deliver, and dispose of garbage, recycling, and compostable waste 3. Make daily scheduled waste, recycling and compost pick-ups 4. Support work-study and other student involvement in waste programs 5. Help direct the work for work-study student employees, based on consultation with Sustainability Coordinator. 6. Maintain and keep orderly the recycling and compost sorting areas 7. Make deliveries as needed to the local recycle and compost centers 8. Contribute to the college’s commitment to safety by using safe work habits, using ergonomics and proper lifting and biohazard protocol as appropriate 9. Follows the college’s standards of conduct 10. Contributes to the college’s commitment to sustainability 11. Demonstrates a high degree of commitment to customer service 12. EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: High school diploma or equivalent. WORK SCHEDULE/AVAILABILITY REQUIREMENTS: Travel required within the local area and on campus. Primarily days with occasional evenings and weekends. Must be flexible and cooperative in fulfilling responsibilities and in meeting the college’s needs. COMPETENCE AND SKILLS REQUIREMENTS: Ability to work with all campus constituencies including faculty, staff, students, contractors, and vendors Ability to conduct duties in a pleasant, discreet and professional manner Ability to work independently on assigned tasks as well as accept direction on given assignments Personal commitment to the environmental focus and mission of the college OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTS: Valid driver’s license with a good driving record PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and occasionally required to sit. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
