In response to requests from colleagues who have attended sessions this term, we have organised
some additional Reading and Spelling CPD sessions for next term:
Developing Reading Comprehension (Morning session)
28 January 2016, 9.30-12.30, Lilla Huset Centre
In this session, we will explore a wide range of active reading strategies to improve and develop
pupils’ understanding of text. Delegates will have the opportunity to discuss ideas and explore
resources for reading fiction, non-fiction and poetry, for use in shared, guided and independent
reading. We will also consider how to develop our questioning skills to extend pupils’ thinking about
a text and deepen their responses. (Suitable For teachers Y2-6).
Learning Objectives

Explore a range of active reading strategies

Develop our questioning skills to extend pupils’ thinking

Consider meaningful activities for independent reading
Challenging your able readers: providing depth and breadth (upper KS2) (afternoon session)
28 January 2016, 1.15-4.00, Lilla Huset Centre
In this session, we will consider what ‘mastery’ might look like in the reading curriculum. We will
explore a variety of texts to ensure we provide pupils with high quality reading opportunities and
extension activities to provide depth and breadth. We will develop good quality questioning to
enable pupils to think deeply about the text they are reading and give higher level responses. We
will also consider how best to prepare our pupils for the new KS2 reading paper. (Suitable for
teachers Y5/6; literacy coordinators.)
Learning Objectives
 To provide depth and breadth through high quality reading opportunities
 To develop good quality questioning to extend pupils’ thinking and analysis of text
 To have a good understanding of the end of KS2 assessment performance descriptors for
reading and the requirements of the new KS2 reading paper
Teaching spelling: Enabling pupils to attain the spelling requirement in writing (1/2 day)
2 February, 9.30-12.30, Lilla Huset Centre
To meet the expected standard in writing, pupils have to demonstrate attainment of all the
requirements within the standard, including “spelling most words correctly, including common
exception words (Y5 and 6)”. It is not only the spelling of individual words that we are trying to
teach, but the basic spelling patterns so that learners can spell correctly words they have not been
taught but want to write. The aim is for the learners not to have to memorise individual words, but
to be able to work them out from known patterns and principles. In this half-day course, we will
explore a range of activities to teach spelling rules and conventions and consider how to support
children to learn to spell.
Learning Objectives
 Consider the statutory requirements for teaching spelling
 Consider spelling rules and conventions
 Explore a range of activities and resources
 Consider how to support children to learn to spell
Developing Spoken Language; Promoting Thinking Skills
9 February 2016, 9.30-3.30, Lilla Huset Centre
Spoken language would seem to be the poor relation in the new programme of study and yet we
know that spoken language underpins all learning. In this course we will explore the correlation
between spoken language and thinking and learning skills. We will look at a range of activities and
strategies, including drama, to enable pupils to:
• Articulate and justify answers, arguments and opinions
• Maintain attention and participate actively in collaborative conversations
• Use spoke language to develop understanding through speculating, hypothesising, imagine and
exploring ideas
• Consider and evaluate different viewpoints, attending to and building on the contributions of
others
(Statutory requirements for spoken language)
Course Leader for the above sessions is Eleanor Martlew
