Explanatory Notes
1
This achievement standard is derived from The Arts in the New Zealand Curriculum,
Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 2000, Level 7 strand, Developing Ideas in
Music.
2
The task is an instrumentation one, not an arrangement. Students are therefore not
expected to create new material, although in some instances this may be appropriate
(eg adding a drum kit part, creating idiomatic accompaniment figures etc).
3
An instrumentation essentially involves the allocation of existing musical material to a
range of instruments sounding in combination.

4
For assessment, the student is required to submit an instrumentation which includes
an audio recording, the original source material (eg piano reduction, audio recording),
and one of the following:

a score

annotated source material

detailed written description.
5
The task will require the instrumentation of approximately 32 bars from a piece of
music, for an ensemble of at least five independent parts.
6
An independent part is an instrumental or vocal line of music. A piano or keyboard
part counts as a single line.
7
Workable means that the instrumentation is able to be realised by the ensemble and
shows:

knowledge of instrument ranges

knowledge of instrument playing techniques

understanding of instrument combinations.
8
Effective means that the instrumentation shows:

knowledge of instrument ranges

knowledge of instrument playing techniques

developed understanding of instrument combinations and ensemble writing

idiomatic writing for each instrument

variety of textural density.
9
Convincing means that the instrumentation shows:

knowledge of instrument ranges

knowledge of instrument playing techniques

developed understanding of effective instrument combinations and ensemble
writing

imaginative and idiomatic writing

skilful use of textural density.
10
For assessment, appropriate tasks for instrumentation could be:

a piano piece for a small orchestra of single woodwinds and strings

a piano piece for a small jazz band

a hymn or chorale for a brass ensemble

a song for a rock group
