Create an effective instrumentation that shows some character, and developed understanding of instrumental techniques and combinations. Create a convincing instrumentation that shows character and imagination, developed understanding and skilful use of instrumental techniques and combinations. Explanatory Notes 1 This achievement standard is derived from The Arts in the New Zealand Curriculum, Learning Media, Ministry of Education, 2000, Level 7 strand, Developing Ideas in Music. 2 The task is an instrumentation one, not an arrangement. Students are therefore not expected to create new material, although in some instances this may be appropriate (eg adding a drum kit part, creating idiomatic accompaniment figures etc). 3 An instrumentation essentially involves the allocation of existing musical material to a range of instruments sounding in combination. New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 Number AS90267 Version 3 Page 2 of 3 4 For assessment, the student is required to submit an instrumentation which includes an audio recording, the original source material (eg piano reduction, audio recording), and one of the following: a score annotated source material detailed written description. 5 The task will require the instrumentation of approximately 32 bars from a piece of music, for an ensemble of at least five independent parts. 6 An independent part is an instrumental or vocal line of music. A piano or keyboard part counts as a single line. 7 Workable means that the instrumentation is able to be realised by the ensemble and shows: knowledge of instrument ranges knowledge of instrument playing techniques understanding of instrument combinations. 8 Effective means that the instrumentation shows: knowledge of instrument ranges knowledge of instrument playing techniques developed understanding of instrument combinations and ensemble writing idiomatic writing for each instrument variety of textural density. 9 Convincing means that the instrumentation shows: knowledge of instrument ranges knowledge of instrument playing techniques developed understanding of effective instrument combinations and ensemble writing imaginative and idiomatic writing skilful use of textural density. 10 For assessment, appropriate tasks for instrumentation could be: a piano piece for a small orchestra of single woodwinds and strings a piano piece for a small jazz band a hymn or chorale for a brass ensemble a song for a rock group a song for a vocal ensemble.
