The Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine (IIDMM) provides a highly collaborative research environment, focussing on infectious diseases and biomedical research relevant to the African continent. The

IIDMM hosts a Computational Biology research group ( http://cbio.uct.ac.za

), which provides leadership in

Bioinformatics at the University of Cape Town and forms part of a broader network of Bioinformatics Groups spanning tertiary institutions across South Africa. A Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor position in the field of

Bioinformatics has been opened within the computational biology group and IIDMM.

Key responsibilities:

 Provide leadership in the area of Bioinformatics within the IIDMM and at UCT

 Develop a research group in the area of bioinformatics/computational biology

 Raise research funding through the submission of self-initiated proposals to national and/or international funding agencies

 Publish bioinformatics-related research results in international peer-reviewed scientific journals and through conference presentation

 Through collaboration, support the research of other members of UCT

 Provide Bioinformatics support services as required by other stakeholders within and outside of the UCT

 Oversee and contribute to Bioinformatics teaching and curriculum development at UCT

Key requirements:

 A PhD in Bioinformatics, or a related discipline

 Experience of leading a successful research group

 A strong publication track record in scientific journals of high international standing

 The capacity to engage in collaborative research

 Awareness of current techniques and standards in Bioinformatics and the capacity to track the development of the field

 Good programming skills or the ability to oversee computational research or software development projects

 Capacity to apply Bioinformatics across a broad range of application areas

 Exposure to high-performance computing would be an advantage

The post is for 5 years in the first instance. The annual remuneration packages, including benefits, for 2009, at the following levels are:

Senior Lecturer: R273 131 to R393 743

Associate Professor: R314 099 to R460 147

The annual remuneration for 2010 is currently under review.
