Department/ Service Name Allergy Description of Services offered The Allergy Clinic accepts referral for a wide variety of immediate-type allergic reactions, including: Text can include bullets, hyperlinks, and lists Rhinitis Food allergy Drug reactions Latex allergy Anaesthetic reactions (general and local) Anaphylaxis Systemic reactions to bee/wasp stings We also see patients with non-allergic urticaria and angioedema (including acquired or hereditary angioedema due to C1 inhibitor deficiency). There is a monthly anaesthetic allergy clinic for patients who have had a reaction related to general anaesthesia. We do not see patients with food intolerance, or syndromes / symptoms that do not have any established relationship to allergy (e.g. chronic fatigue, chemical sensitivity, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, weight loss, weight gain, migraine, etc.). Generally, we do not see patients with eczema unless there is additional evidence of immediate-type allergy. Treatment and Diagnosis Type I allergy testing is done by a skin prick test. A small drop of allergen is placed on the forearm. A lancet is then used to prick very lightly through the drop. After 15 minutes if a small itchy lump appears the test is positive. Immunotherapy (desensitisation) to aeroallergens and bee and wasp venom is carried out at drop in sessions daily. We do challenges to various foods, drinks and drugs.
