Romeo and Juliet - Act V Journal Assignment
Capulet’s Dream
Shakespeare seemed fond of ghosts. He wrote some memorable ghost scenes. In King Richard III, for instance,
all the dead come back in a dream to haunt King Richard.
Write a short scene that is called Capulet’s Dream (or Nightmare). Who comes back to haunt Capulet, and what
do they have to tell him?
Obituaries
You have been commissioned to write the obituaries of Romeo Montague, and Juliet Capulet for the Verona
Herald. Decide what should be included in the obituary, and then write it for the people of Verona.
Friar Lawrence writes his memoirs
It’s ten years now since the death of Romeo and Juliet…” What does the Friar think, looking back over the
distance of time? He has had to face up to the cruel irony: he married Romeo and Juliet, hoping that their
marriage would end the feud between the Montagues and Capulets. But it was their deaths that caused
Montague and Capulet to shake hands. The Friar also has to cope with his abandonment of Juliet in the tomb.
What does he now think of that? And what has he been doing in those long ten years? Imagine yourself as Friar
Lawrence, and write your memoirs.
The golden statue of Romeo and Juliet
You have been commissioned to design the statue. Will it look like the effigies on Elizabethan tombs found in
many English churches, or will it be some other design? Sketch the design, and add a plaque that
commemorates the lovers lives.
