Shakespeare’s Style William Shakespeare has a very distinctive type of writing. He tells his stories and plays by using a rhyming iambic pentameter. Shakespeare rhyming scheme consists of fourteen lines in iambic rhyming pentameter with an “ababcdcdefefgg” rhyme pattern. William used a pattern of stressed and unstressed called ‘blank verse.’ He also writes in old English, so for some it makes it more difficult to understand, due to the different uses of words. Shakespeare had a very infamous way to his writing that setting him apart from other writers of our time. William Shakespeare Language For a better understanding of William Shakespeare’s writing it helps to know his vocabulary that he uses. For example we asked William what words like misadventured, an, marry, soft meant to him. He answered us with, “Well misadventured basically means unlucky, say if you lost all your money that would be a misadventure you have had. An means ‘if,’ marry is an interjection like ‘indeed’ and soft means to ‘hold on’.” Shakespeare also has his own array of insults that he uses. He says some of his most famous ones are “'Tis such fools as you that makes the world full of illfavor'd children,” from his play As you Like It. Another is from his famous play Henry V, “Face is not worth sunburning.” William Shakespeare essentially has his own language of slang, insults, and vocabulary that is necessary to understand if you want to watch or read his work. He was about fourteen years old when he committed suicide on a Thursday in the Capulet vault next to his beloved wife Juliet, who he and everyone else thought was dead, so he decided if his love was dead he should be to. He ended up poisoning himself. Tybalt: Tybalt Capulet was a kinsman and part for the noble Capulets. Tybalt was killed in a fight on the streets of Verona on Wednesday by his unknown cousin at the time, Romeo Montague. The fight was later broken up by the Prince. One other also died in the fight. Romeo’s punishment was banishment. Juliet: Juliet Capulet was only twelve years of age when she committed suicide on Thursday. She was the only daughter of Lord Capulet and Lady Capulet. It is said she committed suicide by stabbing herself with her husband’s dagger in the Capulet vault. She was there because she faked her death so she wouldn’t have to marry Paris. She killed herself because her husband, Romeo, was dead beside her, and couldn’t live without him. Mercutio: Mercutio was a kinsman to the Prince of Verona and a loyal friend to the Montague family, Romeo especially. In the devastating street fight on Thursday Mercutio was killed by one his enemies, Tybalt. The fight got broken up by the Prince, but sadly he wasn’t fast enough to break it up before Mercutio died.
