 Family Crests, or Coats of Arms, date to the early
Middle Ages because armor was making it difficult to
tell people apart.
 They decided to paint something on their honor to
help with this
 They were important in battle, but also worked kind of
like team uniforms in tournaments
 Over time, shield emblem designs became enduring
symbols of their owners, and of their owners’ families
 It started to become fashionable to have a ‘coat of
arms’, so people hired artists to design them
 They started putting them on tunics, saddle blankets,
banners, tapestries, sculptures, architectural features,
signs, advertisements, coins, jewelry, and stamps.
 It became a thing for every one to do, not just soldiers
 It also helped people recognize each other’s marks
when few people could read or write.
