It is a fieldwork intensive travel course being offered locally. From the syllabus, the goals of the course are: “To immerse ourselves in a landscape (southern CA) in order to gain a deeper understanding of the dynamics of plant populations, communities, and ecosystems; to recognize the role of land use history in shaping ecosystems; to appreciate the challenges of plant conservation and ecological restoration in a multiple-use landscape; and to learn some tools and techniques for conducting plant ecology fieldwork.” We will be alternating lecture and discussion and student presentations with field trips to seven different locales in southern California that illustrate a variety of plant communities, land use histories, and conservation and restoration challenges.
