Course features/short description: This is an upper division elective suitable for biology
or environmental studies majors or minors. It is a fieldwork intensive travel course
being offered locally. From the syllabus, the goals of the course are: “To immerse
ourselves in a landscape (southern CA) in order to gain a deeper understanding of the
dynamics of plant populations, communities, and ecosystems; to recognize the role of
land use history in shaping ecosystems; to appreciate the challenges of plant
conservation and ecological restoration in a multiple-use landscape; and to learn some
tools and techniques for conducting plant ecology fieldwork.” We will be alternating
lecture and discussion and student presentations with field trips to seven different
locales in southern California that illustrate a variety of plant communities, land use
histories, and conservation and restoration challenges.
