Assessment concerns - trainees making insufficient progress
During some time in the year, a trainee may require additional support and guidance over and above the normal level of support provided by tutors on the programme. The
need for additional support may be identified through the following.
Initial discussions with the Professional Tutor
Regular weekly meeting between the trainee and School-Based Tutor
Initial and assessment visits by the Link Tutor
Lesson planning and observations
Profile reports
Assignments
Review of files of evidence
Other school based staff
Training Manager/Training Coordinator
Additional support to trainees
Sometimes trainees may not make the progress expected or there may be particular issues or problems with progress. It is important to involve other colleagues,
especially where the trainee is showing weaknesses and giving cause for concern. The Professional Tutor may be asked to carry out an additional observation of the
trainee in the first instance or to have a separate meeting with the trainee if there are doubts about professionalism. The Link Tutor may also be asked to complete a joint
observation with the School Based Tutor.
School-Based Tutor training sessions are aimed at supporting schools in the judgements that they make about their trainees’ progress and provide an important
opportunity for moderation. As well as briefing School-Based Tutors about tasks and issues, the focus of the meetings is quality assurance. Files, lesson planning,
evaluations, observations and training plans are moderated at these meetings. Working towards a common understanding of the Standards is of central importance.
The School-Based Tutor/Professional Tutor should contact the Training Manager or Training Coordinator to discuss the additional support needed. The Professional Tutor
should complete the Request for additional support which should be sent to the Training Coordinator.
It is important that early identification is made of a trainee’s need for additional support, in order that the appropriate level of support can be provided to the trainee and
school.
It is vital that that School-Based Tutors are as clear as possible with their trainees with regard to their progress throughout the year. Feedback should be provided in a
helpful, constructive manner giving clear targets for improvement and development.
A request for additional support is not an indication that trainee is failing or has failed. It will allow the school, course tutor and link tutor to identify issues and provide
targeted support.
Targets will be agreed for the trainee to meet within a set time period.
Trainees requiring additional support may have other difficulties as well, such as their own personal circumstances. Trainees are advised therefore to keep their tutors
advised of any circumstances that may adversely affect their training. We would recommend they are discussed with the Training Manager or Training Coordinator. Any
matters concerning a trainee’s personal circumstances should be dealt in with in the strictest confidence.
If there is inadequate progress during the period of additional support, the trainee will move to ‘Cause for concern’. See czone guidance.
