SELECTION PROCEDURE: After reviewing applications, those applicants judged most suitable for the
position will be invited to oral interviews. These applicants will be notified by phone on or about Monday, July
12, 2010. Initial interviews are tentatively scheduled on Friday, July 23, 2010.
POSITION DESCRIPTION: This is a full-time (40 hours per week, 12 months per year) position working in the
Computer Technology department. Overtime may be required to accommodate the needs of the department.
The position requires the equivalent to a B.A. in computer science or related field and two years of local area
network support, as well as Microsoft certification in MS Server 2008 and MS Exchange 2007. Additional
experience may act as a substitute for educational requirements. The job description listing duties, abilities
and requirements is attached.
STARTING SALARY: $4,175 - $5,086 per month, plus excellent benefits including CalPERS retirement. At
present, the District contributes an average of $14,700 per employee per year toward the cost of medical,
dental, vision, life, and LTD coverages; this includes coverage for the employee and family. In addition, this
position offers 16 paid holidays each year, and generous vacation and leave benefits.

DEFINITION:
Under the direction of the Project Manager-Title III, install, maintain, upgrade and manage the
College local (LAN) and wide-area (WAN) network infrastructure, including all computing and
telecommunications systems. Tasks include, but are not limited to, installing, upgrading and
maintaining College servers, firewalls, switches, personal computers, computer peripherals and
telephone systems. Prepare designs for the ongoing evolution of the LAN/WAN infrastructure
including hardware and software recommendations. Provide user support, including
troubleshooting and repair of all LAN/WAN components.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: The LAN Administrator’s primary duty is to ensure
that the LAN/WAN elements are available and capable consistent with the standards of the
Technology Department. The LAN Administrator receives direction from the Project ManagerTitle III and the Systems Administrator (on-staff or contracted) and supervises one or more LAN
technicians.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
The duties of the LAN Administrator include accomplishing and supervising LAN technicians in
the following:
Installation, maintenance, upgrade, troubleshooting, repair and management of servers, routers,
switches, PC’s, and peripherals
Monitor and manage the local area physical and virtual networks (LANs and VLANs), network
devices and servers; optimize the performance of the networks; analyze user needs and
develop recommendations for network improvements.
Monitor and manage network security; maintain application, folder, file and document access
control lists; maintain firewall, switch, and server configurations; coordinate, manage and audit
network/domain accounts including user accounts, LAN Administrator,

email accounts, and email distribution groups; investigate and act upon suspicious network
activity; maintain anti-virus and anti-spam solutions on network servers. Investigate and
recommend solutions for new network threats.
Research network and server problems; install, integrate and tune network software; relocate
network equipment and wiring as needed; collaborate with others on a variety of technology and
technology support projects and problems. Act as an interface with equipment vendors for
resolving problems, repair and or replacement of equipment, and purchasing of network
equipment and software.
Manage and maintain backup systems for server data; manage print queues; maintain, monitor
and troubleshoot network printer and file services; prepare and maintain current network and
server configuration and procedure documentation.
Maintain a high degree of current technical knowledge and expertise in installed and
prospective LAN/VLAN technologies through research, training, technology conferences,
classes and workshops, and industry certifications; maintain technical knowledge in current
network equipment such as servers, firewalls, switches, routers, hubs, wiring and network
cards; and perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF AND EXPERIENCE IN:
Principles, practices and technical applications of LANs, VLANs and network equipment
including servers, Internet protocols, firewalls, routers, switches, network communications, and
developments and enhancements in information technology related to these systems.
Microsoft Windows client and server operating systems including but not limited to Server 2003
and 2008 and Windows XP, Vista and 7; Microsoft Exchange, HP networking equipment, and
experience installing, configuring, and repairing all of the foregoing.
LAN and VLAN installation, configuration, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance procedures
and practices.
Documentation of LANs and VLANs, software applications and IT procedures.
ABILITY TO:
Interpret work orders; analyze problem equipment; document equipment problems; troubleshoot
and solve a wide variety of computer network problems.
Work independently, taking initiative in line with departmental priorities.
Analyze technical problems and recommend appropriate solutions.
Think logically and in abstract terms.
Respond to computer users needs in a positive and professional manner.

Read, interpret, and execute complex instructions. Research and interpret a variety of technical
documentation and manuals.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related technical field and two years of experience in
network operations, network administration, and local area network support or
AA/AS degree in computer systems or a related technical field and three years of experience in
network operations, network administration, and local area network support or
Five years of experience in network operations, network administration, and local area network
support.
