AUTHORS’ NOTE: Recently and after the submission of this manuscript, a new publication was released putting firmer age constraints on the deposition of the Mesoproterozoic Ruyang Group and the overlying Luoyou Group to 1750 to 1400 Ma, older than previously assumed (Lan et al., 2014). This pushes back the age of our material, and provides the new date for the appearance of complex eukaryotic morphologies presented here to 1.4 Ga at the latest, not at 1.2 Ga as initially stated in here.
