REPORTING TO:

PURPOSE: To drive and maintain a range of refuse collection vehicles.
To supervise, mentor, direct and monitor the crew providing a regular reliable and efficient
refuse collection service to the residents of Hull including domestic and trade waste.
Ensuring the completion of daily schedule, all related paperwork and relaying information
regarding unresolved problems, crew performance, changes to trade contracts and corrective
action to Manager.
To provide a statutory refuse service to public and trade customers contributing to the
Council’s statutory recycling targets and departmental objectives.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Continually supervise, train, mentor, direct and monitor the Refuse Collectors in
delivering a regular and reliable collection service, to ensure the completion of all
scheduled daily work, reported missed collections and all on demand requests in line
with safe working practices. Conducting assessments of employees including new
and temporary. Reporting any unresolved issues or problem areas affecting crew
performance to Manager or Customer Relations along with corrective action.
Ensuring the crew are in receipt of all documentation necessary e.g. assisted list,
schedule, non presented sheets and are all wearing the necessary Personal
Protection Equipment

Drive a wide range of vehicles (11, 17 & 26 tonne Large Goods Vehicles) in areas of
extremely tight access in all weather conditions and ensure the completion of all daily
work, the safety of crew and members of the public. To ensure the vehicle is operated
legally at all times with reference to Road Traffic Acts, Health & Safety and the
Environment Protection Act 1990 in particular vehicle weights and waste carried.

Responsible for own vehicle including daily & weekly maintenance checks and
recording vehicle checks, defects, mileage and driving hours etc. as required,
ensuring all loads are legal and sign as a true record. Reporting suspected urgent
vehicle faults to Management and wait with vehicle for breakdown assistance or drive
vehicle to Vehicle Workshops if safe.

Collect empty and return a range of heavy wheeled bin containers from various
locations, including domestic and trade properties in all weather conditions. An output

target of approximately 1,800 collections per crew per day resulting in the collection of
approximately 34 tonnes per day. To complete daily work schedules and collect
additional waste during holiday periods to ensure full service delivery.
Operate a range of manual, semi automatic and automatic bin lifting equipment.
Ensuring correct alignment, placement and removal of heavy containers from bin
lifting equipment. The operation of all safety features including safety stop buttons in
accordance with safe working procedures to prevent damage, spillage and injury.
Ensuring public safety and preventing any public contact with equipment.
Provide advice and assistance to groups who request help with removal of the refuse.
To enter and exit individually agreed properties removing refuse from and
communicating with the elderly, disabled, vulnerable and trade (use of keys/swipe
cards) customers, which equates to 6% of all waste collection services.
Provide information and advice to customers on all Waste Management issues
including bin presentation, overloaded bins, damaged bins and access to other
services i.e. bulky items and recycling. To respond to customer enquiries, including
instances of confrontation, in a polite and courteous manner at all times.
To be responsible for informing the public through leaflets, stickers or letters
regarding any changes to service delivery, including holiday arrangements which can
effect up to 7,500 properties, to maximise public awareness.
Make operational decisions on areas of collection, damaged bins (reporting and
arranging delivery of new or repair of existing and remove damaged bin if necessary),
heavy bins (which may damage bin lifting equipment and may result in being
consumed by vehicle) and appropriate bin presentation to ensure safe collection,
informing customer of any problems, and identifying any faults with equipment.
Assist in manually sorting a range of recyclables into separate vehicle compartments
ensuring no cross contamination of materials. Collection of data through the use of
electronic handheld barcode scanners to enable accurate monitoring of waste and
recycling participation rates
Undertake all the duties of a recycling blue bin driver charge hand as required
including manually handling sorting a range of recyclables

The above principal accountabilities are not exhaustive and may vary without changing
the character of the job or level of responsibility.

all times.
The postholder must be flexible to ensure the operational needs of the Council are met.
This includes the undertaking of duties of a similar nature and responsibility as and when
required, throughout the various work places in the Council.
