NZQA Expiring unit standard 5469 version 5 Page 1 of 4 Title Locate and repair vehicle water leaks, rattles, and squeaks Level 3 Credits 4 Purpose This unit standard is for people in the automotive repair industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to: isolate the fault in the vehicle; rectify water leak into vehicle; and rectify vehicle rattles and squeaks. Explanatory notes 1 The following legislation, regulations, publication, and their amendments are required to be consulted and followed where applicable: – Health and Safety in Employment Act, 1992 – Transport (Vehicle Standards) Regulations, 1990 – New Zealand Road Code; Land Transport Safety Authority. 2 Reference to suitable tools and workshop equipment means industry approved tools and equipment that are recognised within the industry as being the most suited to complete the task to a professional and competent manner with due regard to safe working practices. 3 Because of the particular nature of this unit standard, it is essential that the assessment evidence is obtained from commercial jobs in the workplace under normal workplace conditions. Range 1.2 The fault described by the customer is reproduced. Range 1.3 road test to simulate conditions when fault occurs, communication with customer to isolate fault. Fault area is isolated and reported to the supervisor. Range 1.4 type of fault; when the fault occurs; area where the fault occurs; associated factors – noise, weather conditions, road conditions. visual inspection, testing. Vehicle components causing the fault complained of by the customer are identified. Outcome 2 Rectify water leak into vehicle. Evidence requirements 2.1 Safe working practices are observed throughout the task. Range personal safety, safety of others, equipment and vehicle safety. 2.2 Suitable tools and equipment are selected and used that enable the water leak to be rectified. 2.3 Seals and panels that require refitting and realigning are identified and reported to the supervisor for remedial action. 2.4 Weather strips and door seals are repaired and/or replaced according to supervisor's instructions, so as to prevent water entry into the interior of the vehicle. Outcome 3 Rectify vehicle rattles and squeaks. Evidence requirements 3.1 Safe working practices are observed throughout the task. Range 3.2 personal safety, safety of others, equipment and vehicle safety. Suitable tools and equipment are selected and used that enable the rattles and squeaks to be rectified. Range components not requiring extensive repairs and/or replacement. 3.4 Components requiring extensive repairs and/or replacement are referred to the supervisor. 3.5 The vehicle is road tested to confirm that the rattle and squeak complained of is eliminated.
