Those credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of tinters; prepare to match a colour; and match the colour. Explanatory notes 1 The following legislation and regulations (and subsequent amendments) are relevant to this unit standard and must be followed where applicable: – Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act, 1996; – Health and Safety in Employment Act, 1992; – Transport (Vehicle Standards) Regulations, 1990; – Spray Coating Regulations, 1962; – Approved Code of Practice for the Safe Use of Isocyanates, 1994 (OSH, Department of Labour). 2 This unit standard applies to both single and two pack finishes. 3 When the evidence requirements state to the 'acceptable industry standard', it is assumed that it complies with the product and vehicle manufacturers' standards. 4 Because of the particular nature of this unit standard it is essential that assessment be carried out in a commercial workplace under normal working conditions. Evidence requirements 1.1 Tinters for the different kinds of paints are identified according to paint manufacturer's specifications. Range 1.2 Principles of how tinters function are identified according to paint manufacturer's specifications. Range 1.3 artificial lighting, natural lighting, light box, direct sunlight, shaded light; metameric colours. The effects of reflection on matching colours are identified. Range 1.7 value, hue, chroma. When matching colours, the effects of different coloured lights are identified. Range 1.6 durability, colour match, warranty, tinter strengths, opacity, metamerism. When adjusting colours, the effects of different coloured tinters on each other are identified. Range 1.5 full strength, reduced strength, metallic, pearl, special effect. The importance of using tinters according to the manufacturer's specifications is identified. Range 1.4 solid colours, metallic colours, pearl finishes, tinted clearcoats, graphite finishes, clear finishes, special effect tinters; water borne, solvent borne. coloured walls, floors, overalls, adjacent vehicles. When using paint materials, health and safety hazards are identified according to manufacturer's specifications and legislation requirements. Range fire, fumes, overspray, spray mist, toxic dust. Range complete vehicle, vehicle panels. Evidence requirements 2.1 Materials and equipment are identified, and used according to the manufacturer's specifications. Range 2.2 Vehicle is situated in a well lit, ventilated area according to the paint manufacturer's specifications. Range 2.3 may include but are not limited to – scales, microfiche, formula book, type of paint to be matched; test panels, let down panel, measuring stick and paint container; spray gun. natural light, no shadows or reflections. Vehicle panel is clean according to vehicle manufacturer's specifications. Range free of traffic film, dirt, faded (oxidised) paintwork. 2.4 Quantity of paint to be matched is identified, and colour is mixed according to the paint manufacturer's formula. 2.5 Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task. Range personal safety; safety of other people; vehicle safety; workshop safety; environmental safety; tool, equipment, and machine safety. Outcome 3 Match the colour. Range solid colours, metallic colours, pearl colours. Evidence requirements 3.1 Tinters used to match the colour are identified according to manufacturer's specifications and the acceptable industry standard. 3.2 Paint viscosity, spray gun set up, and application techniques are identified and used according to the acceptable industry standard. Range 3.3 full panel, blending. Colour is matched and applied to the vehicle according to manufacturer's specifications and the acceptable industry standard, and there is no difference in colour between the existing paintwork and the applied paint. Range 3.6 personal safety; safety of other people; vehicle safety; workshop safety; environmental safety; tool, equipment, and machine safety; solvent, isocyanate and paint inhalation and absorption. Work is completed to the acceptable industry standard and in an acceptable industry time.
