Three daily lessons Unit 13 North West Consultants ******** Handling Data This Unit Plan is designed to guide your teaching. Year 3 You will need to adapt it to meet the needs of your class. Summer term Unit Objectives Year 3 Resources needed to teach this unit: Pages 92-93 Solve a given problem by organising and interpreting data in Venn and Carroll diagrams – one criterion. Set of 2 D shapes and /or logic blocks. 2 Hoops 2 P.E. Maths. Resource Sheets Link Objectives Year 4 Year 2 Solve simple problems by sorting classifying and organising information in a table, a pictogram, or block graph. Solve a given problem by collecting, classifying, representing and interpreting data in Venn and Carroll diagrams – two criteria. Solve a given problem by organising and interpreting data in a Venn diagram – one criterion. Vocabulary Venn diagram Sort Criterion Resources R.S. 13.1 R.S.13.2 Large open space Year Group: 3 Plenary Teaching Activities Take children to playground. Draw two large circles in chalk and label them can swim / cannot swim. (Choose own criterion if preferred). Teaching Activities/Focus Questions Plenary Discuss solutions. Explain that the school is trying to organise swimming lessons and needs to know who can or cannot swim. Q Where will we put 13? Why did you decide to put it there. Record on large whiteboard. Ask the children to go in the appropriate circle. Extend to 3 digit nos. Count how many are in each circle. 153, 1000 200 254 etc. Ask questions such as How many more/less children can swim than can’t? cant Can more boys swim than girls? How many more boys can swim than girls? Return to classroom. Ask the children to put their names in prepared circles labelled blue eyes / not blue eyes. (See R.S.1. for alternative criteria). North West Consultants Unit Plans Q Can anyone think of a whole number which does not fit into either circle? If not why not? By the end of the lesson the children should be able to sort data onto a Venn Diagram using one criterion. Planning Sheet Day 1 contin. Oral and Mental Objectives and Vocabulary Unit 13: Handling Data Term: Summer Main Teaching Teaching Activities Objectives and Vocabulary Year Group: 3 Plenary Teaching Activities Give children R.S.2. and ask them to sort a given set of numbers into multiple of 5 / not a multiple of 5. Use nos (written up) e.g. 13, 10, 52, 25, 70 17 53, 45, 95, 14, 57, 19, 55 etc North West Consultants Unit Plans Teaching Activities/Focus Questions Planning Sheet Day 2 Oral and Mental Objectives and Vocabulary Unit 13: Handling Data Term: Summer Main Teaching Teaching Activities Year Group: 3 Plenary Objectives and Vocabulary Teaching Activities Teaching Activities/Focus Questions Solve a given problem by organising and interpreting data onto a Carroll diagram. (one criterion) In either hall or playground draw two boxes touching (or use two P.E. mats.) Plenary Show Venn diagram with children’s names on from Day One. Label them triangle / not triangle. Give each child a shape and ask them to put them in the right box according to the criterion. Vocabulary Carroll diagram Sort Criterion Resources 2D shapes R.S.13.3. Ask how we could put this information onto a Carroll diagram . Label columns Discuss Ask questions such as what does not triangle mean ? What is in this box? Why? Blue eyes / not blue eyes Ask where the names should go. Ask them to sort themselves into boy / not boy – discuss. Ask them to sort themselves into has a brother / does not have a brother. RETURN TO CLASSROOM Give out R.S.13.3 Ask children to label each column Odd North West Consultants Unit Plans Not odd Repeat with multiples of 5 from Day One. Transfer the information from Venn diagram to Carroll diagram on OHT made from R.S. 13.3 Planning Sheet Day 2 Oral and Mental Objectives and Vocabulary Unit 13: Handling Data Term: Summer Main Teaching Teaching Activities Objectives and Vocabulary Year Group: 3 Plenary Teaching Activities Teaching Activities/Focus Questions Discuss what is meant by not odd. Ask for examples. Ask children to sort numbers e.g. 21, 12, 49, 94, 50, 91, 37, 73, 41, 14, 32, 23, etc. Extension – 3 digit nos. 234, 123, etc. By the end of the lesson the pupils will be able to sort data onto a Carroll diagram according to one criterion. On O.H.T.13.1 label Ask children to choose a shape from logic blocks. circles multiple of 3 / even numbers. Ask some children to describe their shape. Number the children 1 to 30. Revise sorting into 2 sets (circles) 4 sided / not 4 sided. Ask each child where Change criterion and sort again. Repeat twice to put their number. more. Point out that some numbers do not go in Now ask two children to sort them into red either circle. shapes and triangles. Discuss why. Q. Have you got all the triangles in Hoop A? Point out that the outside rectangle is Q. Have you got all the red shapes in Hoop B. part of the Venn diagram. Q. How can we put the red triangles in both hoops if we only have one hoop for red shapes By the end of the and one for triangles? lesson the children Point out we need all the triangles in Hoop A and all the red shapes in Hoop B. If children do not come up with overlapping the hoops ask them to put the red circles as near to Hoop B as possible – still keeping it in Hoop A. North West Consultants Unit Plans will be able to sort data according to 2 criteria onto a Venn diagram Planning Sheet Day 3 Term: Summer Main Teaching Oral and Mental Objectives and Vocabulary Unit 1: Handling Data Teaching Activities Objectives and Vocabulary Year Group: 3 Plenary Teaching Activities North West Consultants Unit Plans Teaching Activities/Focus Questions If all else fails the teacher could overlap the hoops for them. Explain that the overlapping part is called the INTERSECTION . Ask which shapes they think will go in the intersection. Ask pupils to describe the shapes in each area. i.e. red shapes/ not triangles red triangles triangles /not red not red/ not triangular Repeat with other criteria Circles / thick shapes 4 sided / blue Task Give the children R.S.13.4. (Venn Diagram with 2 intersecting circles) Ask them to sort the numbers to 30 into Set A – Multiples of 3 Set B - Even nos. North West Consultants Unit Plans
