The Egyptians invaded the Sinai Peninsula, while the Syrians had trouble throwing the occupied Israeli troops out of the Golan Heights, at which Israel responded with a counterattack, and they recaptured the Golan Heights. A Cease-Fire agreement between both sides went into effect on October 25, 1973. Was the reason why the Israelis didn’t form a counter attack because, on Yom Kippur, Jews weren’t allowed to fight? Yes, and at the same time the Israelis were to pray and fast for 25 hours. Background: In 1967 Egyptians and Syrians had a full on war against the Israelis in 1967. It was called the SixDay War, because it only lasted for six days. After the Six Day War, Israel came out as the victor of the war. As a result of Israel’s victory, Israel claimed about 23,500 square mile of territory from Egypt, which were the Sinai Peninsula, Gaza Strip, Jordan, West Bank, and East Jerusalem. At the same time Syria lost its Golan Heights. By 1970 Anwar el- Sadat the President of Egypt realized that if Egypt will be in financial trouble, if Egypt were to continue its quarrel with Israel. Thus he plotted to attack Israel again, even if it may end unsuccessful, it would convince Israelis that peace was necessary between the two nations. If a cease fire agreement was formed between Egypt and Israel, why did Israel turn out to be the victor as a result of the war? - The victory might’ve been claiming additional properties from Syria, as Syria never signed a cease fire agreement with Israel. President Sadat was quite smart, knowing that Israel wouldn’t succumb to peace that easily with the Arabs, thus he waged another war, in order to force Israel into going peace with Egypt. The war: The fourth Israeli-Arab war began on October 6, 1973, the same that the Israelis are observing Yom Kippur. Egypt and Syria launched an unexpected attack against the Israeli as they were on a religious holiday, but after a few days the Israel was full mobilized and were again to push This is significant, because this is the first time out of all the Israelis-Arabs war that Arabs had the upper hand in this battle. Egypt and Syria was quite smart, knowing Israel wouldn’t be able to respond to their attack, while the Arab forces back. By October 25, the Egyptian and Israeli agreed on a cease-fire agreement which was secured by the United Nations. on their religious holiday. The Aftermath: The aftermath of the fourth Israeli and Arab war Things seem went Okay for the Israeli, but in the was that Israeli was the victor with the cost of end they’re the victor of the war. large amount of causalities, at which the Israelis blamed the government’s lack of preparedness. As a result, in April 1974, Golda Meir the Israeli prime minister resigned. At the same time, because of the battle, it allowed Egyptians and Israeli to form a peace agreement. At which the Egyptians were able to get back the Sinai Peninsula. In 1979 Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem signed the first peace agreement between Israel and its Arab neighbors. As a result of the war, it seems quite successful for the Egyptians as they were able to form peace between the Israelis as well as claim back the Sinai Peninsula. Things were great for the Egyptians, as a result of the war, but for Syria it was a disaster. As a result of the Egyptian-Israeli cease-fire agreement, it allowed Israel to attack Syria without Egypt’s interference. As a result Israeli gained more territories in the Golan Heights, because of this in 1979 Syria voted with other Arab states to expel Egypt from the league of Arab nations. While things were successful for the Egyptians, for the Syrians, it was that much, as after the Israeli formed a cease fire agreement with Egypt, it allowed Israel to focus on Syria. As a result, Syria lost even more land to Israel. In the end Syria was quite mad that Egypt abandoned them, thus Syria attempted to expel Egypt from the league of Arab nations. Write an analysis of what you learned from the article From this article, I have learned that the reason why the Egyptians and Syrians were able to catch the Israeli off guard with their attacks, was because the Israelis were on a special religious holiday, thus it prevented the Israelis from responding to the attack. Also the aftermath was great for Egypt, it allowed for Egypt to form a peace agreement with Israel. However for the Syrians, it was bad, as Egypt agreed to stop fighting with Israel, it allowed Israel to invade more Syrian territories.
