` האגודה הישראלית לתרבות הדיון Sia'h vaSig —Israel Debating Society The Harry Hurwitz National Public Speaking Competition 2015-2016 School Year Sia'h VaSig-Israel debating society, founded in 1987 by Dr.Ann Sversky, is a non-governmental organization whose main goal is to promote civilized, well-mannered discourse in Israel using the world wide- known format of "Debate" and rhetoric. Overview: At some point in our lives, public speaking is required of each of us. It may be in a social, political or business setting. Additionally, studying rhetoric also develop selfesteem, confidence and powers of persuasion, not to mention improving language skills, increasing the ability to analyze issues logically and build strong arguments, enhancing students' abilities to succeed in higher education, interpersonal communication and other spheres of life. All these essential skills are developed in the course of preparation for the competition of persuasive public speaking Goals: - Enabling students to research the background knowledge of the topic/issue/problem; - Presenting information and opinion on a wide range of topics of social and moral importance in an organized manner, with supporting facts and arguments; - Sharpening and significantly improving presentation, public speaking and analytical and critical thinking skills The Public Speaking Israeli National Competition for Junior and Senior High Schools provides an opportunity for young people to develop the skills of effective spoken language (both Hebrew and English). The competition is open to three – five students per school division (junior and senior high), both in English and in Hebrew. The participants develop their knowledge of Page 1 of 5 issues, enhance their speech writing skills, their speaking and presentation skills and their ability to think analytically, boosting self-confidence with emphasis of encouraging the discussion of controversial topics and current affairs.
