About the Trainer
Dr Clayton has been conducting workshops on Understanding by Design for schools in
Singapore since 2007. In the last three years, she has added one-day workshops on
assessment literacy and thinking for teachers and AEDs. These workshops have been well
received. Susan is a facilitator for the “Making Thinking Visible” module on Harvard’s elearning portal, Wide World.
About the Workshop
 Assessment for learning is a proven powerful tool for engaging students in learning.
The research is clear on the power of assessment for learning to deepen student
learning.
 Making Thinking Visible is a part of Harvard’s Project Zero’s work in teaching for
understanding. *
This interactive workshop is designed to equip teachers with knowledge about assessment
for learning and critical thinking. Teachers will also learn skills for creating powerful
thinking routines that will enable the students they are working with to use deeper
thinking in their learning and apply self and peer assessment about their thinking.
Goals:
 Participants will learn and practise skills for facilitating thinking routines with their
students.
 Participants will learn and practise how to teach their students to make their
thinking visible.
 Participants will learn how to create assessment conversations with their students
and engage students in self and peer assessment regarding the quality of their
thinking.
 Participants will practise designing thinking routines that weave in peer and selfassessment.
 Participants will be able to use the knowledge and skills in their classroom
immediately.
