What and where are China’s water resources? (Textbook P.13-26)
Key Questions:
1. Where are the major rivers in China?
2. Where are China’s water resources?
Preparatory task
Find out the meaning of the BOLD words. Write down the definition in Chinese in the boxes below.
Passage A
China is the fourth largest country in the world. It has a relatively large amount of water
resources. In China, there are many rivers, the most important three are the (1) Chang Jiang, the (2)
Huang He and the (3) Zhu Jiang. They serve about 700 million people in China. Besides, the (4)
Hai He and the (5) Huai He are other important rivers in China.
Most rivers in China flow from the west towards to the east. This is related to the (6) relief of
China. The distribution of water resources is uneven in China. The amount of water resources in
China decreases
from south-east to north-west. There are two factors to affect the distribution
including (7) monsoon climate and (8) drier in the inland.

Task 3: The following figure shows the relationship between the relief of China and the
direction of flow of major rivers.
a. Describe and explain the relationship between the relief of China and the direction of
flow of major rivers.
Relief
 The west is mostly ( highlands / lowlands ).
 The east is mostly ( highlands / lowlands ).
 The height of land ( increases / decreases ) from the west towards the east.
The flow of rivers
 Rivers can be divided into upper course, middle course and lower course.
 The source of rivers start from the upper course which is usually located in
( highlands / lowlands ).
In China, the height of land ( increases / decreases ) from the highlands in the west
towards the lowlands in the east. Since water flows from highlands to lowlands , rivers
of China flow from west towards east.
