EDUCATIONAL AND CAREER PLANNING GUIDELINES At each grade level, students are encouraged to meet their Career Advisor to begin and continue the process of educational and career planning. The following is a set of guidelines for students and parents to consider during high school to begin to explore options for the years ahead. The Career Advisors are available to meet with students individually as well as in classroom s, student/parent meetings, and small groups throughout the school year. 9th GRADE CAREER PLANNING Complete the iSeek.org career investigation unit required during your Economics course. Attend the CIHS College Fair in the Fall (if applicable) to start exploring your post secondary options. 10th GRADE CAREER PLANNING Visit the Career Center in the high school to acquaint yourself with resources available for your use. Explore career planning computer programs in Minnesota Career Information System (MCIS) and iSeek.org. Explore educational opportunities available for 11th and/or 12th grade years, such as Post-Secondary Enrollment Options, Marketing Internship, Tech Prep Courses, College in the School Courses, Advance Placement Courses, and Value Added courses such as CISCO. Complete a career investigation unit in the required Teen Survival course. Attend a College Fair in the Fall to start exploring your post secondary options. Start volunteering to increase scholarship potential and explore career interests. 11th GRADE CAREEER PLANNING Continue use of MCIS and iSeek.org computer-based career programs to assist in career decision-making process. College-bound juniors should take the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) in October to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Attend with parents a College Fair to visit with representatives from post-secondary institutions and collect information for further decision-making. Meet with college representatives who visit the high school. Also, visit the campuses of post-secondary institutions for a firsthand look at programs and facilities. During the Spring, college-bound juniors are encouraged to take the ACT or SAT college entrance exams. Interested students are invited to visit with their Armed Services Recruiter about military options and the opportunity to take the Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) 11th or 12th grade. Set up your own or request job shadowing experiences through the Career Center. 12th GRADE CAREER PLANNING Use career programs to further explore career options and to investigate postsecondary institutions and scholarship opportunities. Attend a College Fair with your parents to get any college questions answered. If not taken in the 11th grade year, (or if planning to retake), register for the ACT or SAT test early in the Fall. Schedule a Senior Exit Interview to receive and review college options and plan. Start the financial aid process and apply for scholarships. Visit with college representatives who visit the high school, and make on-site campus visits during the school year. Attend the Financial Aid Night offered to students and parents in January. Complete and submit college applications to schools of your choice. (Check deadlines. Many schools fill in the fall of the year.) Request a transcript through www.parchment.com. Complete and submit college room and board application. If not completed already, request a job shadow.
