Internship/Fieldwork Grant - Application Form
Undergraduate and graduate students are invited to apply for a Nielson International Grant to support
their internationally-oriented internship or international thesis/dissertation fieldwork in the area of energy
and sustainability of natural resources. The internship or research project should focus on internationallyoriented topics related to energy and sustainability of natural resources. Priority will be given to those
who demonstrate an interdisciplinary and international breadth in their course of study which promotes
development of the human resources and know-how required to solve critical energy and natural
resource challenges faced by society. This grant opportunity represents a partnership between the
Center for Global Studies and the School of Energy Resources to promote interdisciplinary academic and
research programs in a broad range of disciplines across UW. The maximum award is $2500. Questions

The application deadline is Friday, February 6, 2015. Early applications are accepted! Students will be
notified within 4 weeks after the application deadline. Incomplete and late applications will NOT be
accepted!

Please attach a letter addressed to the Center for Global Studies-SER Nielson Committee that explains
what you expect to gain from your proposed internship/research experience. The letter should discuss
efforts you have made to prepare for international study, including your financial contribution, e.g. other
scholarships received or applied for + amount, part-time work. Also include information about previous
travel, study and work abroad, if any. Graduate students completing thesis research must provide details
on their project.
Application Letter Format: Please describe the intended program of study, including location, sponsorship
(if any), length of time, and prospective work or research. Attach a printed description of the
program/internship you have applied for, if available. Students wanting to do independent research
should outline their research plans in some detail and indicate a probable faculty mentor. Specifically list
one reference name with contact information (faculty member knowledgeable about
internship/research or thesis adviser). This application form including the budget form with a list of all
expected expenses must be included. All applicants also have to include unofficial transcripts from all
colleges or universities attended.
