Kathryn Wasserman Davis Scholarships in Critical Languages
These grants are merit-based and are intended for individuals with demonstrated interest
in one or more of the following areas: foreign languages, international, global or area
studies, international politics and economics, peace and security studies, and/or conflict
resolution. The grant covers the full comprehensive fee for one summer at the
Middlebury Language Schools, plus transportation to and from Middlebury’s Vermont
campus and program related expenses. One summer of intensive immersion language at
Middlebury is the equivalent of one full year of language study taken during the regular
academic year. Language study levels include beginner to graduate level in Arabic,
Chinese, Russian, Japanese or Portuguese. There are additional intensive immersion
summer programs at Middlebury College for other languages but this grant is not
intended for them.

Critical Language Scholarship Program
A program of United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural
Affairs, the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program offers intensive summer
language institutes overseas in critical need foreign languages. Critical Language
Scholarship (CLS) institutes provide fully-funded group-based intensive language
instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences for seven to ten weeks for U.S.
citizen undergraduate, Master’s and Ph.D. students. Languages include Arabic, Persian,
Azerbaijani, Bangla/Bengali, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Punjabi, Turkish, Urdu,
Chinese, Japanese, and Russian.

International Summer and Winter University: Humboldt-Universitaet zu Berlin
Each summer and winter the Humboldt University offers a variety of short programs (one
week to about a month) in both German and English, which span a variety of topics
including language study, cultural and international studies, and the arts. Courses include
class as well as fieldtrips and other outings to various cultural and political sites in Berlin.
The program is intended for those interested in German cultural, political, historical, and
media studies. Course fees range from approximately 400 – 800 Euro depending on the
length and type of program.

Foreign Service Institute: School of Language Studies
The School of Language Studies is part of the U.S. Department of State’s Foreign Service
Institute located in Arlington, Virginia. The School provides intensive language training
in approximately 70 languages and familiarizes students with cultural norms and other
relevant background material. Classes usually have six or fewer students who typically
spend five hours per day in class and an additional three hours studying independently.

IES Abroad
The Institute for International Education of Students is a non-profit organization, which
has provided students from U.S. colleges and universities academic study abroad
opportunities since 1950. It sponsors six different programs in Germany, three in Berlin
and three in Freiburg. The options include summer study, semester, and full academic
year programs, which specialize in Language and Area Studies, Urban Studies (Berlin),
Environmental Studies (Freiburg), and an English-taught European Union program
(Freiburg). IES offers a number of merit-based scholarships as well as the David Porter
Diversity Scholarship for students of color, the GLBT population, students from different
religious and ethnic groups, and students with physical disabilities.

Freie Universität Berlin: International Summer University
The Fubis program is intended for students interested in German culture, history,
language, and art and caters to a variety of language proficiencies, with German language
courses being held on at least five levels of proficiency and many classes taught in
English. There are two sessions: one which begins in June and ends in mid-July and one
which begins in mid-July and ends mid-August. Admission is rolling and the number of
participants per course is limited to 18 students so early registration is strongly
recommended.

Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship Program
This 9 month program (September through May) provides young American professionals
(ages 23-34) with two high-level work placements in the federal government and in the
private sector in Germany. Three seminars taking place throughout Europe provide and
in-depth understanding of issues facing Germany and the European Union today.
Candidates are competitively chosen from the fields of business administration,
economics, journalism, law, political science and public policy. Ideal candidates have a
master’s degree or at least 2 years work experience in their field.

Brown in Germany
Brown’s study abroad programs in Germany are based at Humboldt-University in Berlin
and Eberhardt-Karls University in Tuebingen. Study abroad at either site combines a
strong academic program with firsthand experience of the dynamic process of change
within today’s Germany.

NYU in Berlin
The program at NYU in Berlin is designed for students in the social sciences and
humanities who want to earn credit in their majors—including sociology, history,
politics, and European studies—while having a transformative experience abroad.
Courses are taught in English, and German language courses are offered at all levels. Day
trips and guided excursions in and around Berlin are included in the program. The
program is held at Humboldt University and is available in the fall, spring, summer, and
full academic year.

Duke in Berlin
Duke in Berlin was founded at the Freie Universität of West Berlin in 1988 before the fall
of the Berlin Wall. Since 1990 the fall semester has taken place at Humboldt Universität
in former East Berlin while the spring-summer semester continues to be based at the
Freie Universität. Students attend Duke University courses taught by German faculty and
by the program’s resident director. Students with sufficient German may take courses in
the Berlin universities. Qualified engineering students may take courses at the Technische
Universität Berlin. The program helps students advance their language skills, deepens
their understanding of German culture, and broadens their grasp of the social sciences, art
history, and technology in a German and European context.

Goethe Institut
The Goethe-Institut has 50 years' experience in teaching German as a foreign language,
teacher training and developing curricula, examinations and course materials. Our
courses in Germany and abroad, internationally recognised examinations and distance
learning programs are precisely coordinated. An internal and external evaluation system
ensures the quality of the instruction. External quality control is certified by EAQUALS

Boston University Dresden Program for Engineers
This program is approved only for sophomore Engineering students without proficiency
in German. Students enroll directly at the Technische Universtaet Dresden and all classes
are taught in English. The program is offered only for the spring semester.

Howard R. Swearer International Service Fellowship
The Swearer Fellowship is a full-time summer fellowship for current sophomore, junior,
and senior students who want to spend the summer pursuing international service work.
Students on Financial Aid will be given priority in the application process. The work can
be of the student’s own design or can be a pre-existing internship. Funds may not be used
to pay fees for service programs nor may it be used for tuition. Awards range up to
$3500.

Undergraduate Teaching and Research Awards (UTRA)
With an UTRA fellowship you collaborate on a research project with a faculty member.
This can either occur individually or as a part of a larger group and often takes place over
the summer or during the semester. Research may be done on-site out of the country.

particular topic, but also of the research process itself.

Austro-American Association of Boston Scholarship
The Austro-American Association of Boston annually offers a scholarship of $1000 $1500 to fund a project that focuses on Austrian culture. Project areas may include

Deutsche Gesellschaft e.V. Praktikum

Students accepted into this program receive work experience lasting at least three months
in event management, PR, and or office management. Applicants should be interested in
political, social, or cultural German or European studies, should have good computer
skills, be independent, organized, flexible and enthusiastic. Those with a good
knowledge of the German political system, foreign languages, especially Eastern
European languages, and business management are preferred.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
The Gilman Scholarship Program offers awards for undergraduate study abroad and was
established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. This scholarship
provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant
funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad
programs worldwide. The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen
undergraduate students who are planning to study abroad. The program aims to diversify
the kinds of students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go by
supporting undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial
constraints. The Gilman Scholarship Program accepts applications two times per year.
Ideally, students should begin their application one full semester before their study
abroad program is scheduled to begin.

Hessische Internationale Sommeruniversitaeten (ISU)
Each summer at Phillips-Universtaet Marburg, there is program focusing on a specific
theme that deals with political, sociological, and cultural themes. The program includes
seminars in both German and English and German language courses. Applicants should
be advanced undergraduates. Marburg is a traditional university town in the heart of
Germany and participants will enrich their knowledge of German culture and language
while studying international themes.

Leo Baeck Summer University
The Leo Baeck Summer University is an English-speaking six-week summer school in
Jewish Studies at the Humboldt University, Berlin. Advanced undergraduate or beginning
graduate students from the United States, Canada, Germany, Israel, and Eastern European
countries are encouraged to apply for this unique program. As a transatlantic bridge and
international meeting point for education and exchange, the LBSU examines Jewish life
in Germany before and after the Holocaust, with a particular focus on the postwar, postHolocaust and contemporary experience in relation both to the broader and ever more

Botsiber Institute for Austrian-American Studies Grant
The Botstiber Institute for Austrian-American Studies (“BIAAS”) seeks grant proposals
for projects aimed at promoting an understanding of the historic relationship between the
United States and Austria. Grant proposals may include requests for funding for research
and writing projects, for literature, poetry and music projects, for seminars, institutes,
lectures, translations, for the production of films and television programs, and the like.
Grants will range from $5,000 to $25,000 unless a compelling case is made for larger
grants. Grants will be distributed on or before September 1, 2010 and generally should
be used within the following twelve-month period. A final performance report will be
due within ninety days after the completion date of the award period.

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program at RWTH Aachen University
RWTH UROP International is a summer program intended for undergraduates wishing to
get hands on experience. There is intensive language training throughout, so no
knowledge of German is required for program admission. The focus of the program is
the research project, which is mentored and supervised by a member of the research staff
of the university. Students do not pay any fees except for a 50 Euro processing fee, and
must cover their own travel and accommodation costs as well as insurance fees and living

expenses. Thirty scholarships will be awarded to students with an outstanding academic
record and a letter of recommendation.

Transatlantic Program (TAP)
Since 2005 the Transatlantic Program has annually offered a select group of U.S. students
the opportunity to gain practical work experience in a total immersion environment in
Germany, Europe’s largest economy. The program enables students in the fields such
as renewable energies, engineering and business to gain practical skills for their future
careers, to improve their foreign language abilities and to learn first-hand about the
German business environment and culture. The program is intended for juniors and
seniors who are concentrating in Engineering, Business Administration, International
Relations or Renewable Energies but other fields of study are also welcome. Two years

Concordia Language Villages

The Concordia Language Villages are small communities in Minnesota built for the sole
purpose of total cultural and language immersion. Most programs are aimed at children
and teens during the summer, and Waldsee, the German language village is one of the
most popular. Every summer Concordia looks for more than 1000 staff members to be
counselors, credit teachers, and other positions. College students are most often
employed as counselors and a very good knowledge of the language is required.
Concordia offers programs in Arabic, Chinese, Danish, English, Finnish, German, Italian,
Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Russian, Spanish, and Swedish.

Study & Internship Program (SIP) in Germany

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) University Summer Course Grant
This program provides scholarships to attend a broad range of three- to four-week
summer courses at German universities which focus mainly on literary, cultural, political
and economic aspects of modern and contemporary Germany. Extensive extracurricular
programs complement and reinforce the core material. Scholarships are awarded to
students pursuing full-time study at Canadian or US colleges or universities. There are no
restrictions as to field of study, but applicants must have attained at least sophomore
standing (second-year standing in Canada) at the time of application.

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) German Studies Research Grant
This specialized DAAD program offers up to five German Studies Research Grants to
highly qualified undergraduate and graduate students who are nominated by their
department/ program chairs. The grant may be used for short-term research (one to two
months) in either North America or Germany. Undergraduates with at least junior
standing pursuing a German Studies track or minor may be nominated for the grant by
their department and/or program chair. Applicants are expected to have completed two
years of college German and a minimum of three courses in German Studies (literature,
history, politics or other fields) at the time of nomination. Grants are restricted to citizens
of the US who are enrolled full time at the university that nominates them.

Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE)
DAAD, in cooperation with science organizations in North America and Germany, offers
summer internships in Germany for undergraduate students in the fields of biology,
chemistry, physics, earth sciences and engineering. RISE fellows work directly with
doctoral students in research groups at top German universities and institutions and can
expect to gain serious hands-on research experience. Every RISE intern receives a prorated monthly scholarship of approximately €650 for any period of six weeks to three
months between June and August.

Students
Study scholarships provide highly qualified individuals with an opportunity to do
independent study in Germany or to complete a full Master’s degree. German
universities offer attractive graduate programs in both English and German in a wide
variety of fields. Graduating seniors, graduate students and recent graduates who have
completed their Bachelor's degrees no longer than six years before the application

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Study Scholarship for Artists and
Musicians
These scholarships aim to provide highly qualified students in the fields of fine art,
design, film, music, choreography and architecture with an opportunity to complete a
program of additional studies, with or without earning a formal degree, at a German
institute of higher education. Graduating seniors or graduate students applying for this
program must be enrolled full-time at an accredited university at the time of
application.(Those who have already completed an undergraduate degree do not need to
be currently enrolled.)
Recent graduates who have completed their Bachelor's degrees
no longer than six years before the application deadline are welcome to apply. PhD

Research grants are awarded primarily to highly qualified PhD candidates who are early
in their academic/professional careers or to individuals wishing to earn a doctoral degree

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Intensive Language Courses in
Germany
DAAD offers grants to graduate students at North American universities to attend 8-week
intensive language courses at leading institutes in Germany. Extensive descriptions of the
institutes, their teaching philosophies, course content, as well as course dates are
available on the website of each institute: Goethe-Institut, S + W speak + write, did
deutsch-institut, Carl-Duisberg-Centren, InterDaF Leipzig. Scholarships are awarded to
students currently enrolled full-time in a graduate program in all fields of study except

Artists-in-Berlin Program (DAAD)
Each year, approximately 15 to 20 internationally known artists as well as qualified
young sculptors, painters, writers and composers from abroad are invited to spend 12
months (6 months in exceptional cases) in Berlin. The grant for filmmakers is limited to a
six month stay. Here they have the opportunity to continue their work undisturbed and to
participate actively in the cultural life of the city. The aim of this program is to promote

LEOlingo Sprachcamps für Kinder
LEOlingo Sprachcamps für Kinder offers children and teenagers, aged between 7 and 17
years old, “language holidays” in English, French and Spanish. Counselors will be

The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) for Young Professionals is a full-year

The Émigré Memorial German Internship Program–German State Parliaments (EMGIP)
is a fellowship program that provides U.S. and Canadian students with internships at a
German state parliament (Landtag). Internships afford students an excellent opportunity

and learn about German culture firsthand. EMGIP is ideal for students planning on

Boren Fellowships
Boren Fellowships provide U.S. graduate students an opportunity to add an important
international and language component to their graduate education through specialization
in area study, language study, or increased language proficiency. Boren Fellowships
support study and research in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests,
including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin American, and the

Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are
excluded. Boren Fellows represent a variety of academic and professional disciplines,
but all are interested in studying less commonly taught languages, including but not
limited to Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Swahili.

This is a resource made by Brown Career and Development Center. “Going Global” has a
lot of country-specific information, including an employer directory and job and
internships postings. It also offers information on visas and work permits, cost of living
