Decontaminate piggery

When to use
Follow this work instruction to decontaminate a piggery.
Before you begin
Ensure:

you have the required equipment and supplies

the site and buildings have been prepared for decontamination (see Decontamination site
preparation work instruction).

Garbage and feed
Step
Action

Remove all garbage for burial, incineration or removal from the place.

Remove all solid foodstuffs from feeding troughs for burial, incineration or removal from
the place.
If automatic feeders of pig swill are used, flush out the pipes using approved disinfectant
solution.

Holding pens and internal races
Step
Action
1
Foam the entire floor area of the holding pens and internal races.

Working from bottom to top, foam 3 metres up the walls
3
Saturate with mist spray any remaining walls above 3 metres, and the ceilings.

Ensure all sides of gates, railings and timber supports are foamed.

Check with Treatment Manager before proceeding.

Clean entire area using water blaster to remove bulk waste. Pay attention to areas between
gratings.
Remove all loose or hard material from wooden gratings with a spade and trowel.

Dispose of waste material as advised by your Treatment Manager.

Give entire grating area a final rinse to remove all waste.

Check with Treatment Manager before proceeding.

Re-disinfect by saturate mist spraying of all areas and surfaces.

Check with Treatment Manager for clearance.
External buildings and structures

Action
Disinfect, clean and re-disinfect as for holding pens.
Yards and external access areas

If there are bulk or large volumes of contaminated materials, ask the Treatment Manager to
organise a front end loader to remove all materials from the external and internal races.
Foam the ground area within the yards, all fences pens, and support timbers.

Ensure all sides of gates and timber are foamed.
Note: pay particular attention to high animal contact areas.
Check with Treatment Manager before proceeding.

Clean entire area using water blaster to remove bulk waste. Pay attention to areas between
gratings.
Remove all contaminated material using a front end loader, if required.

Dispose of contaminated material as advised by your Treatment Manager.

Give entire area a final rinse to remove all waste.

Check with Treatment Manager before proceeding.

On completion of piggery decontamination, spray area around buildings and yards to a
minimum of 2 metres out.
