Acid Sulfate Soils Code (ASS)
PURPOSE OF THE CODE
To ensure that the generation or release of acid and metal contaminants from ASS or potential ASS does not have significant adverse effects on the natural
and built environment (including infrastructure) and human health.
PERFORMANCE CRITERIA AND PROBABLE SOLUTIONS
PERFORMANCE CRITERIA
The purpose of the Code may be
achieved if the following criteria
are satisfied.
P1
Development
does
not
disturb ASS or potential ASS
or development is managed
to avoid or minimise the
release of acids and metal
contaminants.
PROBABLE SOLUTIONS
CODE ASSESSMENT – Probable Solutions (illustrate
compliance with the Performance Criteria may be achieved)

COMPLIANCE / REPRESENTATIONS
Provide a brief illustration of how your proposal
complies with the relevant Probable Solution or a
detailed analysis how compliance is achieved with
the Performance Criteria.
The disturbance of ASS is avoided by:

not excavating or otherwise removing soil or sediment
identified as ASS;

not permanently or temporarily extracting groundwater
that results in the aeration of previously saturated ASS;

not undertaking filling that results in:
- actual ASS being moved below the watertable; and
- previously saturated ASS being aerated.
OR
Any disturbance of ASS avoids the release of acid and metal
contaminants by:

neutralising existing acidity and preventing the
generation of acid and metal contaminants in
accordance with the SPP 2/02 Guideline: Planning and
Managing Development involving Acid Sulfate Soils; and

preventing the release of surface or groundwater flows
containing acid and metal contaminants into the
environment.
NOTE:
The Information Requests Planning Scheme Policy is a guide to the information required by Council to assess development application in relation to the Acid Sulfate
Soils Code.
