Mrs. Cave-Mattie
Iliad Unit
Book Talks
For the unit on the Iliad, we are going to take a different approach then we did with Gilgamesh. Since you
have your history day week next week, you are going to be responsible for reading the first 1/3 of the book during
that time. The Iliad is broken down into “books”, which are basically chapters. For each book, you are going to have either study
questions or a journal to respond to. In addition, you will each sign up (with a partner) for one book from the entire novel to lead a
“book talk” with the class.
Here is the schedule of events for the month of March (TENTATIVE, OF COURSE), since that is when we will meet again.

You will choose a partner, and you will sign up for a book to present. On the day when your book is due, you will be
responsible for covering the events of the book, as well as an analysis of that book, to the class. Things to consider for your minipresentation (although remember that each book is different, so these will not always apply):





Summary of the events (make sure you cover the questions I gave out OR discuss the journal)
Character analysis
o Have we been introduced to any new characters? If so, who are they, what are they like?
o Have any of our characters gone through any significant changes?
o Have any new personality traits come forth?
o Conflicts between characters?
Important/significant events that perhaps foreshadow or create significant conflicts, struggles, changes to the plot and/or
characters
Use of epic conventions
Any many other possibilities exist!!!
You and your partner will come up in front of the class and present to the class. Each mini-presentation will be worth 30
points. Once you finish your presentation, I will fill in what is necessary for comprehension, completeness, etc.
There is always the possibility of pop quizzes, so please be sure you are doing your reading! You are responsible for reading
during the History Day week so that you are prepared to discuss (as well as have your questions checked for homework points) each
book on its given day. During History Day week, I will make any important announcements in the beginning of class. I may also ask
you to check the course website on occasion for updated questions on books, journals on books, etc. You will be responsible for doing
the work that is posted on the course website if requested. I may ask that work be turned in before you start the History Day
presentations for the week, OR I may ask that it be ready for your return to regular class time in the beginning of March.
DON’T FORGET THAT YOUR MYTHOLOGY GROUP POWERPOINTS ARE DUE ON MARCH 2ND!!
YOU WILL NEED TO WORK ON THIS ON YOUR OWN TIME!
Reminder for you! I signed up for Book #_____ with _________________. We are presenting on _____________________.
