Course Description Basic course for beginners including speaking, reading, and writing practices of Modern Standard Chinese language stressing pronunciation and spelling system of Chinese sounds. 2. Prerequisites Only those who never studied Chinese language can take this course. 3. Required Readings Textbook: Elementary Chinese Readers , book 1. Sinolingua, Beijing 4. Recommended Readings Tapes going with the textbook are available at instructor’s office. Dictionaries are not necessary in class. 5. Course Requirements Quizzes covering some lessons , Midterm examination, Final examination are given for checking if the students get the Chinese sounds correctly through the Romanized spelling system. Attendance at all the classes is required since participation in drills given in classes Is an important part of work. 6. Grading Final grade is given when all requirements above are accomplished. Approximate criteria for grading are : Attendance and class participation –- 20% Midterm examination –- 20% Quiz–- 20% Final examination –- 40% The instructor has the right to change them or add some adjustment according to actual situation. Course Outline/Syllabus Introduction : Tones and Sounds Lesson 1 ---- Lesson 8 Oral practice of pronunciation Reading practice of spelled sounds Writing practice of spelling sounds and Chinese simplified characters Practices though short dialogues Lesson 9 --- Lesson 13 ◆Grammar study through text dialogue and paragraph + all above Lesson 9 1.Word order in Chinese 2.The 是 – sentence (1) 3.The interrogative sentence ending with 吗 Lesson 10 1.Attributive 2.Structural particle 的 3.Interrogative sentences in which an interrogative pronoun is used. Lesson 11 1. The 有- sentence 2. A numeral-measure word as attributive 3. Interrogative pronoun 几 Lesson 12 1.Sentences with an adjective as predicate 2.Negation of the sentence with an adjective as its predicate 3.Affirmative-negative question 4,A demonstrative pronoun as an attributive Lesson 13 1.Sentences with a verbal predicate 2.Negation of the sentence with a verbal predicate 146 words and 165 Chinese Characters are learned and 15 sentences patterns and 15 grammar points are mastered. Goal : Students can speak and write about themselves in Chinese. * Chinese class discipline No chewing gum is permitted because it disturbs correct pronunciation. Mobile phone is not allowed since it disturbs your classmates and your own concentration. All students are expected to have a good attitude for learning and follow the school regulation. Those who disturb instructor or classmates in their work are dismissed from the class.
