GENERAL
Check that separate servicing facility exists for
lead-acid and Ni-Cd battery(Shops to be separate)
b)
Check for proper ventilation so that possibility of
cross contamination is not existing .
c)
Check that buildings and rooms used for
servicing batteries
are well lit , cool and
capable of exhausting all the gases & fumes
present during
servicing
and charging
operations.
d)
Check that the floor surface is of a material
which is impervious to acid & alkali, has a nonslip qualities and to washed down easily (e.g.
dustless concrete, bituminous compound, tiling
etc.).
e)
Check that the door(s) of
opens outwards.

2.
WATER SUPPLY
(a)
Check that atleast one tap in each room is
connected to a mains fresh water supply.
b)
Check availab Check availability of sinks,
draining boards and a warm water supply in case
of lead acid battery.
3.
LIGHTING
(a)
Check that the level of lighting within the
charging rooms is sufficient to enable the level
of the electrolyte in individual cells of the
batteries to be
easily determined without
additional lighting.
(b)
Check that all electrical fittings are of sparkless
design.
4.
ENVIRONMENTAL TEMPERATURE
Check that the temperature of battery shop is
maintained at a consistent with
specified
limitations.
5.
CHARGING BOARDS & BENCHES
(a)
Check for proper mounting of charging boards (
charging boards should be mounted directly
above the rear of the benches so that the necessity
for long connecting cables is avoided).
(b)
Check that battery connecting cables have
proper insulation and free ends are fitted with
suitable connectors.
(c)
Check the height of the battery charging
benches so that the need for personnel to lean
over batteries is kept to a minimum, lifting
strain is minimised and a more effective visual
inspection of the batteries can be made.
(d)
Check that the surfaces of the battery
charging benches are acid & alkali resistive and
are provided with suitable grids.

6.
POWER SUPPLY
Check that the charging rooms are provided
with proper power supply.
7.
STORAGE
Check that proper segregation of serviceable
and unserviceable batteries are being maintained.
8.
ELECTROLYTES
(a)
Check
whether
manufacturer's instructions
are being followed while handling and storage
of electrolyte materials.
(b)
Check whether proper containers, mixing
vessels, mixing rods etc. are being used while
breaking down of electrolytes.
(c)
Check for proper storage of de-mineralised and
distilled water.
9.
NEUTRALISING AGENTS
Check that proper neutralising agents are
avilable. Neutralising agents for L/A battery are:-
(a)
(i) Saturated solution of bicarbonate of soda,
(ii) Ammonia powder, Borax powder
(b)
Neutralising agents for alkaline battery are:(i) Boric acid solution,
(ii)Boric acid crystals or powder.
(c)
Also check that adequate quantity of saw dust is
available.
(d)
Check that the containers of saw dust and
neutralising agents are clearly marked with their
contents and
use and are kept in readily
accessible positions.

10.
OBSERVANCE
PRECAUTIONS
(a)
Check availability of proper safety equipments
such as fire extinguishers, buckets of sand/ water
etc.
(b)
Check that persons engaged in maintenance of
battery are well aware of the safety precautions to
be observed in the shop.
(c)
Check that persons of the battery shop is well
conversant with the appropriate procedures in
case of the following circumstances:-
OF
SAFETY
(i) Electrical Shock
(ii) Fire
(iii)Spillage of electrolyte on floor/ skins/ eyes etc.
11.
SERVICING
(a)
Check that servicing of the batteries are being
carried out in accordance with the instructions
contained in the manufacturer's maintenance
manual.
(b)
In addition to the general engineering hand tools,
check that the following special tools/ test
equipments are also available:










LITERATURES
(a)
Check availability
instructions manual.
(b)
Check availability of up-to-date approved
procedure sheets according to the scope of
approval (e.g. Procedure sheets for initial charge,
routine charge, capacity check, boost / trickle
charge, insulation test, leak test etc.)
14.
QUALIFICATION OF PERSONALS
of
up-to-date
CMM./
Check that personals engaged in the battery shop
are holding appropriate approvals and their
qualification and experience meets DGCA
requirements.
15.
DOCUMENTATION
Check that proper documentation procedures
are being followed in the shop and also the
preservation of the completed procedure sheets
are satisfactory.
