*Fill in the blanks below to explain how scientists use the
geologic timeline to show Earth’s history (use pg. 303).
A. Geologic time scale is a record of the
_______________ forms and ________________
events in Earth’s history.
B. Scientists placed Earth’s rocks/fossils in order by
__________________________ age.
C. They found major changes in life forms at
____________________________ times.
D. They used these changes to mark where one unit
of time ___________ and the next _____________.
E. The divisions of the geologic time scale depend
on ______________________ in the history of

Important Vocabulary Words!
*Geologic Time Scale: Record of the life forms and
geologic events in Earth’s history.
*Era: The time between Precambrian time and the present
(3 long units of time). They are Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and
Cenozoic Eras.
*Period: This is what Eras are divided into. Range in
length from tens of millions to less than two million years.
Different Eras have a different number of Periods.
*Epoch: This is what Periods are divided into, but only in
the Cenozoic Era because the fossil record is so extensive.
Where do you fit in?
You live in the ________________________ Era.
You live in the ________________________ Period.
