Assignment for Paper #2, ARCH 1700 Architectural Sculpture of Ancient Greece and Rome Timeline for this paper assignment: First draft due to me by class time through email on April 15 Writing Fellow returns drafts with comments on April 22 Final drafts (along with your first drafts) due to me on May 9, in my mailbox at the Joukowsky Institute OR via email by 5 pm In 8-10 pages, compare Greek and Roman architectural sculpture. Construct your papers around the following issues, expounding on them by citing MULTIPLE, SPECIFIC EXAMPLES from both the Greek and Roman worlds. For each example, give the name, provenience, and date. You may organize the paper in any sequence that is comfortable to you and in many cases there will be some overlapping, but make sure to address each topic outlined below: What buildings were decorated with sculptural programs? What was the importance of the physical location of the buildings and sculpture? Who commissioned these buildings and their sculpture? How does the identity of the patron affect the themes expressed in the sculpture? Do personal, historical, civic/imperial interests coincide? What is the relationship between Roman architectural sculpture and Greek architectural sculpture? In what cases do we see references to/inspiration from Greek sculpture? Why? How does architectural sculpture from OUTSIDE the Greek and Roman heartland differ or is similar to architecture from the mainlands? What priorities are expressed in these sculptural programs? Please remember that your papers must be submitted to me by the deadline in order for the Writing Fellow to have adequate time to read and comment on them. As stated on the syllabus, for each day that your paper (first and final drafts) is late, 10% will be deducted from the final grade.
