Element 1
Prepare to do orienteering fieldwork.
Performance criteria
1.1
Basemap preparation enables fieldwork to commence.
1.2
Minimum sizes of features to be included on map are identified.
1.3
IOF mapping symbols and specifications are interpreted to text.
1.4
Personal risks are identified and strategies to manage them justified.

may include but is not limited to – weather, food, hydration, safety
equipment, clothing, footwear.
Element 2
Undertake orienteering fieldwork.
Performance criteria
2.1
Location is known and related to basemap at all times.
2.2
Field observation of contour data identifies omissions and variations from
basemap.
2.3
Field observation of point and line feature data identifies omissions and
variations from basemap.
2.4
Field observation classifies vegetation runnability to standards in text.
2.5
Responsibility for self and the environment is demonstrated at all times.

3.1
Features to be included on orienteering map are placed in relation to known
features.
3.2
Feature generalisations are justified in terms of orienteer legibility and
performance.
3.3
No significant inaccuracies can be detected in the fieldwork.
3.4
Cartographer can use data provided in the production of a five colour
orienteering map that meets IOF standards.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority, or an inter-institutional body
with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from
assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority before
they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for
tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
