Environmental Policy Landscore Primary School Policy Name: Environmental Committee: Full Governing Body Related Documents: Finance policy; teaching and learning policy Policy locations: NA Date Adopted: Review Date: November 2011 November 2013 It is important for the members of the Landscore Primary School community to have awareness and understanding of the effects of their actions upon the environment in which they live, work and play. In order to do this, we need to take responsibility for our own actions and have a sense of duty and care for the world in which we live. The ways in which we will strive towards this goal is to: Reduce the amount of materials we use and waste we produce Re–use materials wherever possible Recycle what cannot be re-used Respect the environment in which we work and play. Reduce Energy We will keep outside doors shut in cold weather. We will make sure we turn off taps when they are no longer needed. This will be monitored by the Little Rotters. The Little Rotters will appoint class monitors to ensure these recommendations are carried out. We will explore on-going opportunities to secure sustainable energy. A governor is to monitor energy consumption. Paper We will reduce the amount of paper we use by: Writing and printing on both side of the paper whenever possible. Each class has a reused paper tray for this. All internal communication will be distributed by email and using the whiteboards. Setting up printer drivers to print on both sides of the paper directly from all school computers Transport We will continue to promote walking buses. We will continue to develop out Gold Award Travel plan to reduce car use and ensure safer journeys to school We will encourage staff to share transport when going on courses, etc. We will work with other schools in the CLC to develop common practices including community-wide No Car Days Re-use Organic and cooked food waste The Little Rotters (led by a member of staff) are responsible for all composting in school. We have two Jora units for composting cooked waste and more traditional units for organic and broken down cooked food compost. Little Rotters collect organic and cooked food waste daily. Our aim is to send no food to land-fill. Gardening Gardening Club (run by a member of staff) will ensure that each class has a raised growing bed and produces food to be eaten in school and/or sold/given to parents and the wider community. Gardening waste will be put into the school compost bins. Gardening Club will undertake basic Grounds Maintenance. Donated materials including containers We will try to find uses for donated materials. This may be to help with storage or for use in art. We are members of Exeter Scrap Store and regularly use materials from there in art and technology. Paper Paper will be re-used within the classroom. Each class will have a box of partially used paper that can be used again. Display paper will be taken down carefully and re-used wherever possible. Paper will be used on both sides wherever possible. Equipment and Uniform Outdated or unwanted equipment will be offered to others who might have a use for it. We are members of the Exeter Freecycle group and regularly use this facility to give away unwanted equipment Good condition uniform including football boots and trainers, will be collected washed and sold or given to children. Unsold items are given to the local clothing bank, The Paper-chain Cooperative Recycle At Landscore Primary School, we recycle a range of materials on a regular basis. Each team corridor, the staff room, the office and the library has a box to collected reused paper for recycling. Little Rotters will collect this paper for recycling twice a week. Little Rotters will work towards setting up a community paper-pulping scheme. The Little Rotters make and distribute note books made from discarded but useful paper to school staff. Cartridges from computer ink are collected in the school office for recycling. The Little Rotters will continue to evaluate our recycling scheme and add to the materials for recycling when necessary. Respect One of our most important aims is that everyone at Landscore will be treated with respect. This rule will permeate all we do. We will extend this respect to the environment and all living creatures. Assessment We will apply for appropriate environmental awards when we think there’s educational benefit. Our annual parents’ survey will have relevant questions about sustainability as will the staff and children’s survey. Observation of particular children and around the school will be a good indication of the success of some of these strategies. Events such as assemblies and the children’s work will be another way of measuring the effectiveness of this policy. Little Rotters will continue to weigh food waste to monitor the effectiveness of our composting systems.
