Tillicum Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society The purpose of this organization shall be to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate desire to render service, to promote leadership, to develop character, and to encourage citizenship in students of Tillicum Middle School. 2015-2016 By-Laws Advisors: Ms. Ghaffari and Ms. LaPrade ARTICLE 1 Membership Membership is an honor bestowed upon a student. Selection for membership is based on outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, service, and citizenship. Section 1. A National Junior Honor Society member who transfers to another school and brings a letter from the former principal or chapter advisor to the new school advisor shall be accepted automatically as a new member of the new school’s chapter. Transfer members must meet the new chapter’s standards within one semester in order to retain membership. Section 2. Members who resign or are dismissed are never again eligible for membership or its benefits. Section 3. Annual dues are $1.00. The dues are used to pay for expenses involving new candidate recruitment, community service projects, certificates and other supplies. Section 4. The individual hours and group service projects shall have the following characteristics: fulfill a need within the school or community, have the support of the administration, be appropriate and educationally defensible, and be well-planned and executed. ARTICLE 2 Activities Section 1. This chapter shall be involved in one or more group service projects each year. Section 2. Each member shall be required to complete a minimum of 10 hours of community service in addition to the group community service project each year. ARTICLE 3 Discipline/Dismissal Members who fall below the standards, which were the basis for their selection, shall be promptly warned (in writing) by the chapter advisors. Section 1. Members that fall below a 3.75 GPA will be placed on probation for one quarter. If the GPA doesn’t reach the academic requirement of a 3.75 after a quarter, the student will be dismissed from the program. If the GPA resumes to a 3.75 or higher after one quarter, the student will resume normal membership. Section 2. Members who miss one meeting per semester will be put on probation. Members who miss two meetings per semester will be dismissed. Section 3. Members who miss one service project during the year will be put on probation. Section 4. Members who do not provide written documentation showing completion of 10 hours of community service per school year will be placed on probation for the first quarter of the following year. The student will remain on probation until the previous year’s hours are completed. Section 5. In case of flagrant violation of school rules or civil laws, a member will be dismissed immediately. Refer to the Tillicum Student Handbook for disciplinary information. Section 6. The National Council and the NASSP shall hear no appeals in dismissal cases.
