Themes vary in each semester Course objectives The course is aimed to offer a broadened and systematized knowledge of a given area in the field of philology Course content Linguistics (Applied Linguistics) Lectures are designed to introduce students to a specialized area of language studies. They acquaint students with current notions and conceptions in selected fields of linguistics, landmark research studies oflanguage of the last decades (also drawn from psychology and anthropology), and prominent theoretical models and methodological paradigms of linguistics.They illustrate current trends in language use and the main varieties of the English language as well as systematize information about language learning processes and teaching methodologies. Literary Studies Lectures are designed to present selected issues, trends and problems in genealogy and development of Anglo-American literatures (British, Irish and American). Literary critical approoaches are illustrated with extracts from poetry and prose. Lectures elucidate mechanism of literaty analysis and interpretation with respect to various frameworks and against the backdrop of extant criticism. Cultural Studies Lectures are designed to systematize and deepen students’ knowledge and cultural and critical competences with respect to a selected area of Cultural Studies (its theoretical foundations, methodology of research, current trends and scopes of research, new cultural practices and formations and trends in cultural consumption) Reading list A. obligatory reading (to get a credit): A.1. used in class A.2. used for self-study B. supplementary reading Reading lists are provided by the instructor during the first class in each semester Effects Knowledge After the course, students: 1) have advanced knowledge of specialized terminology of Literary Studies, Cultural Studies, Linguistics and Applied Linguistics (K_W03) 2) have a critical understanding of sources and bases of knowledge and be familiar with the fundamental epistemological tenets of academic research in the humanities ( K_W01) 3) understand the genealogy and development of specialist categories and procedures in Literary Studies, Cultural Studies, Linguistics and Applied Linguistics (K_W014) Skills After the course, students: 4) can apply the main theoretical frameworks, methodological paragidms and conceptions typical of Literary Studies, Cultural Studies, Linguistics and Applied Linguistics (K_U04) 5) can integrate knowledge from various disciplines within the humanities (K_U05) Social competences After the course, students: 6) critically assess the applicability of various notions and conceptions in the humanities (K_K04) 7) develop their own worldviews and tastes with regard to the knowledge gained in class (K_K03) Contact dr hab.
