THE UNIVERSITY OF PÉCS AWAITS YOU WITH A PROFESSIONAL TRAINING PROGRAMME O N THE REGION ’S PAST, PRESENT , AND FUTURE PROSPECTS , AS WELL AS WITH AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERI ENCE OF CENTRAL EUROPE – WITH A HUNGARIAN TWIST. www.cesun-pecs.hu or www.btk.pte.hu The Faculty of Humanities of the University of Pécs (Hungary) organises a two-week programme in Central European Studies between July 27th and August 9th 2008. “Central European Studies Summer University” – CESUN – is an intensive training programme giving an insight into the region’s history, politics, sociology, economics, and culture, with a special emphasis on Hungary. We provide our students with a rich study and first-hand experience on Central European life. The language of instruction is English. The programme will also be available in Hungarian, provided that a sufficient number of candidates apply. Participants can obtain 9 ECTS credit points for the course, and the University of Pécs will issue them a Certificate in Central European Studies. Objectives CESUN is a two-week intensive programme designed to give an insight into the region’s past and present, with a special emphasis on Hungary. For the past 17 years or so, Central – in the political sense, Central-Eastern – Europe has been a region in transformation from post-Cold War economic and political structures to democratization, free market reforms and EU membership. Within the programme we will, on the one hand, look into the political, cultural, artistic and historical heritage of the region, on the other hand, we will investigate the varying degrees to which political, economic, societal and cultural changes have occurred for the different peoples and nations of Central Europe. Furthermore, we will provide a firsthand opportunity to experience Central-Eastern Europe on national and regional levels: not only do we offer 60 hours of course work (lectures and seminars), but we also provide several field trips and social events to engage with the everyday life of the people of the region. Namely, the programme will provide insight into various aspects of life in Hungary and in Central-Eastern Europe, including political and social sciences history politics EU studies sociology minority studies business and economics, as well as cultural studies civilisation geography fine arts (architecture, paintings, sculptures) philosophy literature film and media folklore gastronomy. music, The event can be attended by anyone interested in the region of Central-Eastern Europe, or in Hungary. Special emphasis is laid on establishing contact with people of different cultural backgrounds. Outline of the programme Professional training Participants are offered 60 hours (30 ninety-minute long sessions) of course work on current issues related to the region. The professional training takes various forms such as lectures, seminars, debates, workshops etc. The lecturers are professors at the University of Pécs. Field trips and social events Candidates are invited to participate in field trips and social events which combine learning and entertainment (film clubs, dance instruction, sightseeing, trips to the countryside, hiking, home-visits, cooking out, wine tasting, games, street festivals, concerts, cinema, clubbing etc.) These events will be coordinated by workshop-leaders. To assist the participants, a buddysystem will be in operation, where Hungarian students will accompany and support the candidates in their outings. Compulsory payments: Registration fee Tuition fee (including course materials) Optional Payments: Accommodation. We provide accommodation in the university dormitory or in a guest house. We provide full board or lunch only (normal or vegetarian – participants must be aware that vegetarian food is not very common and varied in Hungary!). Participants may decide to arrange their meals on their own – in restaurants or otherwise (although shops are widely available, cooking facilities at the dormitory and in the guest house are limited). Trips. In addition to the city of Pécs, we organise excursions and tours to different parts of Hungary. The application for these excursions is optional. For Budapest: From most countries, it is most convenient to take a flight. Planes arrive at Budapest Ferihegy Airport. For Pécs: The most convenient way of travelling from Budapest to Pécs is by an Intercity train (IC). Several trains leave from Budapest for Pécs every day, travelling time is about 2 hours and 45 minutes. Pécs is the end station.
