Overview:
Students will design a scrapbook of historical figures
that have expanded people’s rights and freedoms in
democracy. They will research six different historical
figures for their scrapbook. The students’ scrapbook will
contain information on Paul Revere, Fredrick Douglass,
Susan B. Anthony, Mary McLeod Bethune, Franklin D.
Roosevelt, and Lyndon B Johnson. Each student will need to
provide helpful information that will assist the governor
with his Fourth of July speech.

Paul Revere
Many Americans have expanded people’s rights and
freedoms in a democracy. These historical figures ha
important in ensuring our rights that we have today.

independence, civil rights, women’s rights, educationa
voting rights, and worker’s rights.
The governor has asked us to help him write a speech
has to deliver to Congress on the Fourth of July.

classmates.

Conclusion:
After researching and creating your scrapbook page for the
governor, discuss in class the struggles and obstacles that these
historical figures had to overcome. Next, discuss how things might
have been different if these historical figures had not made a
difference in the history of democracy. Then, discuss important
Americans that fight to ensure our rights today. Students could
create and design a mini-scrapbook of someone in the present that
expands people’s rights and freedoms in a democracy.
